C.G. Asking Help In Finding Sailor

The Coast Guard is seeking the public’s help in locating a sailor who left Sitka July 9 on his boat and is currently missing.

Rory Conan Williams, 45, a Sitka resident, reportedly left town on the 32-foot sloop LEGZ, which was moored in Sealing Cove.

He was expected in San Diego, California, on July 27. His plans were to visit his mother there, and continue on to Mexico. The Coast Guard in San Diego received a call from his mother when he didn’t arrive as expected, said a spokesman from Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center Alameda.

The website boatwatch.org posted a “be on the lookout” message on August 4. The Coast Guard in Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California sent out a similar message to boaters on VHF Channel 16, asking the public to keep an eye out for signs of Williams or his boat, which is a sailing vessel with white hull, navy blue sail covers, radar on the stern, formerly called Allegro.

Those with information are asked to call the Rescue Coordination Center Alameda at 510-437-3701, or the local Coast Guard. The RCC Alameda spokesman told the Sentinel no calls have been received.

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
