Conference Set
Early bird registration closes today for the First Alaskans Institute’s 41st Annual Statewide Elders and Youths Conference, set Oct. 13-16 at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage.

Ocean Wave
Quilters Meet
Ocean Wave Quilters monthly meeting will be held 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the United Methodist Church.
Meetings are open to all. Refreshments will be served. Janine Holzman will present a trunk show during the meeting.

Seasonal Sales Tax
Rate Change Notice
The City and Borough of Sitka Tax Office reminds citizens the seasonal sales tax rate will decrease to 5% effective Oct. 1 through March 31.

Open Sewing
Session Oct. 5
Ocean Wave Quilters will sponsor its next free open sewing session 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the United Methodist Church.
All are invited to attend. Irons, ironing boards, tables and chairs are provided. Lunch is potluck. For information call Linda Swanson at 907 747-3471.

Airport Hold Room
Exit Modification On
Beginning Oct. 1 and continuing through late spring, construction at the Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport will alter the exit from the passenger hold room to accommodate the installation of a jetway foundation.
Passengers will no longer exit the breezeway. Instead, they will pass through a secure corridor adjacent to baggage claim to access the airfield. Instructions will be provided by airline staff when boarding and moving onto the airfield.
‘‘We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding during this construction period,’’ the city said.

Wi-Fi Available
At Centennial Hall
Satellite Wi-Fi is available at Harrigan Centennial Hall, 330 Harbor Drive, in front of the building as a new hotspot.
The wireless network is titled “Royal Caribbean Free Internet,” which requires no password to login.

Mosquito Cove
Trail Closure
The Mosquito Cove Trail and the Katlian Bay Road will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 19, for hazardous tree removal on the trail.
The USDA Forest Service, in partnership with Alaska State Parks and Sitka Trail Works, will be blasting large rootwads that are currently blocking the trail. People are asked to avoid the area on Thursday.

Blasting Planned in
Granite Creek Area
Exploratory mining and blasting operations at the Granite Creek lease lots 2 and 3 quarry are planned this week.
Blasting activities may occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., as needed.
The area should be avoided and signage followed.

Indigenous Peoples’
Day Celebration On
All are invited to Sheet’ka’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration on Oct. 14 at Harrigan Centennial Hall.
This year’s theme is ‘‘Linking Generations: Our Ancestors, Us, and Our Future.’’
The program begins with a dinner at 4 p.m., followed by dance and music performances, a special presentation, a panel discussion, and breakout sessions. There is no charge to attend. For information, call 907 738-4323 or check their Facebook page.

Sitka F&G Panel
To Meet Oct. 2
The Sitka Fish and Game Advisory Committee will meet 6 p.m. Oct. 2 to prepare recommendations for the Board of Fisheries regarding the king salmon management plan.
The AC also will discuss a proposal to regulate unguided charter boats. The meeting will be held at the office for Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture at 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.

The freshmen students initiation will be Friday at the school. Dress will be respectable. ... Suspension of three days will be enforced for any of the following violations: throwing of eggs; spraying of shaving cream; cutting of hair; and any pranks which could be harmful to the welfare of the students.
