Assembly Chooses Officers for the Year

In the final item of business at its meeting Tuesday night, the Assembly elected Tim Pike as deputy mayor and JJ Carlson as vice deputy mayor. The deputy mayor presides at Assembly meetings when the mayor is absent, and the vice deputy mayor presides when neither is present.
Assembly members also signed up for volunteer assignments as liaisons at meetings of city boards, commissions and committees.
The selection of deputy mayor and vice deputy mayor, and liaison assignments generally take place at the first Assembly meeting after the fall election.
The committee, commission and board assignments for liaisons are:
Gary Paxton Industrial Park – Chris Ystad, Thor Christianson
Health Needs and Human Services – JJ Carlson and Kevin Mosher
Historic Preservation – Scott Saline, Carlson
Investment – Eisenbeisz, Christianson
Library – Saline, Pike
Local Emergency Planning – Mosher, Christianson
Parks and Rec – Mosher, Chris Ystad
Planning –- Christianson, Ystad
Police and Fire –- Pike, Mosher
Port and Harbors – Ystad, Mosher
Sustainability – Christianson, Mosher
Tree and Landscape – Saline, Pike
Assembly members also volunteered to serve as liaisons for Sitka Economic Development Association (Eisenbeisz, Christianson); Sitka Tribe of Alaska (Eisenbeisz, Pike) and School Board (Mosher, Pike)
The liaisons are conduits between the Assembly and the individual committees in the city organization.
The city clerk’s office said there are openings for appointment to the following board and commissions: animal hearing board, employment relations board, health needs and human services commission, historic preservation commission, investment committee, Local Emergency Planning Committee, police and fire commission, sustainability commission, and tourism commission.
The city clerk’s office said so far five applications have been received for the seven at-large positions on the tourism commission. The deadline to file for a seat is noon Oct. 15, the city clerk said. Appointments are scheduled for the Oct. 22 Assembly meeting.
