A brown bear and one of her two cubs were shot and killed by a Sitka resident early Thursday after the animals entered into a storage building in the 4200 block of Halibut Point Road, in the vicinity of the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal, and were trying to get into freezers, Alaska State Troopers report. Authorities deemed the shooting a valid defense of life or property.
Troopers got word of the shooting from police at about 3 a.m. Thursday.
The second cub left the area but by early afternoon today hadn’t been located, AST information officer John Dougherty told the Sentinel.
“Residents should be advised brown bear cubs can be dangerous and not approach the animal,” the Troopers’ report said. Troopers asked that anyone sighting the lone cub to notify Alaska Wildlife Troopers, at 747-3254, or the Sitka Police Department at 747-3245.
Also Thursday morning, a trooper issues citations for three Sitkans on Indian River road for failing to secure their garbage and, as a result, attracting bears to the area. The trooper on the scene drove the animals away.
