Sacred Harp Sing
Listed on Sunday
The public is invited to Sacred Harp singing, an American a capella tradition also known as shape note, and best described by the New York Times as “...where Gregorian chant meets bluegrass.”
The Denson Book sing will take place 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, in the Pioneer Home Chapel.  Books are provided. No experience is necessary and listeners also are being encouraged to attend. For information call Kari at 907 738-2089.

Annual Bazaar at
Pioneers Home
The Sitka Pioneers Home gift shop is holding its annual bazaar 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7 in the gift shop and main lounge.
Included will be an assortment of ceramic, knit and other craft items, as well as baked goods.
Sales support SPH Resident Council.

Barn Dance, Live
Music Nov. 30
A free community barn dance is planned 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Odess Theater in Allen Hall on the SJ Campus.
Live music is by Fishing for Cats. Dances are taught and called. No dance experience is necessary.

Food Assessment
Results to be Given
Callie Simmons will announce the results of the Sitka Community Food Assessment on 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at Sitka Public Library.

St. Michael’s Banquet On

St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral parish invites the public to help celebrate the feast day of St. Michael at a dinner and program 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at the ANB Founders Hall.
The dinner will be catered by Thai Alaska Kitchen (taste testers gave rave reviews!).
The program will feature performances by several dance groups, including traditional Native dances by Lingit troupes, the Mt. Edgecumbe High School Unungan and Yupik dance groups, Sitka Kaagwaantaan Dancers, and Sitka’s New Archangel Dancers; a presentation by notable storyteller Bob Sam; a short program by the Cathedral choir; and a prize and dessert auction.

The parish encourages the public to attend.

Turkey Shoot
Set for Nov. 23
Sitka Sportsman’s Association will host its annual turkey shoot 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at 5211 Halibut Point Road.
It will include trap and skeet and the Indoor 22 pistol and rifle shoot. It’s open to all ages. No experience is necessary.
Cost per round of trap or skeet is $20 and $5 for the Indoor 22. Winners will get to pick a turkey or a coupon for a free round of trap or skeet. It is limited to one turkey or coupon per person. For information call 907 738-4539.

Senior Activity
Meeting Planned
City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation invites seniors and organizations offering senior recreation and leisure activities to a planning meeting 2-3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the Swan Lake Senior Center, 402 Lake Street.
Discussion will include sharing current and future senior programs, updates to Swan Lake Senior Center facilities, and identifying gaps in recreation needs.

STA Meetings
Slated for Week
Sitka Tribe of Alaska has scheduled the following meetings for the week of Nov. 18-22.
The Tribal Council will hold its regular monthly meeting in person only on 6:30 p.m. tonight at 200 Katlian Street.
The STA Annual Meeting is slated 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Harrigan Centennial Hall. All are invited to attend.
The Cultural Resources Committee will meet 4 p.m. Friday at 204 Siginaka Way and via Zoom.

Garage Sale for
Pregnancy Center
A garage sale will be held 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 23, at Sitka Christian Center, 502 Hirst Street.
Those who wish to donate items can drop them off at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, at the Christian Center.
Organizers ask that no clothing be donated. Those who wish to donate large items should check back Saturday at noon to pick the item up if it hasn’t been sold.
Proceeds will benefit Sitka Pregnancy Center. For more information call Denise at 907 747-5012.

Street Names, by Bob DeArmond: Furuhelm Street, just east of Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School, from Kimsham to Kashevaroff streets, was named, with modified spelling, for the 13th and next to last chief manager of the Russian American Company. He is one of the four chief managers for whom Sitka streets have been named.

50 YEARS AGO

November 1974

Arrowhead Lions will put on a dance Saturday for funds to buy Universal Gym Equipment for Sitka High gym classes. Lions Club President Roger Howard will donate his band, “The Tequila Sunrise,” for starting of the fund raising. The equipments costs an estimated $4,000.
