The Planning Commission Wednesday approved two conditional use permits for short-term rentals, and a letter to Harris Island property owners from the city urging them to create a maintenance agreement for their jointly owned bridge and roadway.
All items on the agenda at the regular meeting were approved unanimously by the  three commission members present – Stacy Mudry, Wendy Alderson and Robin Sherman. Darrell Windsor and Catherine Riley were absent.
The first short-term rental request was by Courtney Lecrone and Luigi Sequenzia for their single family home at 508 Hirst Street, in the R-1 Single Family/Duplex zone. They said they would operate the rental between May and September, with quiet hours between 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. and a maximum of six guests.
The second permit request was by Jarred and Jami Rivera for their single-family house at 105 Patterson Way, in the R1 Single Family/Duplex zone. The petitioners said the rentals will be managed by Sitka Travels, and operate from May to August. Quiet hours will be 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. and there will be a maximum of five guests.
A letter to the commission opposing the Patterson Way rental said the writer purchased a home in the neighborhood believing short-term rentals were not allowed. In response Wendy Alderson said there is no rule against short-term rentals in the area.
The commission voted to approve a letter drafted by Planning Director Amy Ainslie to be sent to Harris Island property owners. The letter is a continuation of the commission’s deliberation on a minor subdivision request for a Harris Island lot at 305 Islander Drive. When the commission considered that request in December, the Planning Department noted that there’s no agreement on record for maintenance of the bridge and roadway jointly owned by all property owners on the island.
The letter approved by the commission said it will hold a meeting at Centennial Hall 6 p.m. February 18 at which Harris Island residents are invited to discuss a maintenance agreement “as well as other neighborhood interests and concerns regarding future development.”
The “other neighborhood interests” refers to the controversy over any subdivision of existing lots in the low density zone.
