Employers Are Ready for Sitka Job Fair

Sitkans seeking employment will have a chance to peruse opportunities at a job fair Wednesday, where folks may meet prospective employers and see what opportunities are available around town, the state Department of Labor says.
“If someone’s walking through the door... they’re going to see just a variety of different employers there,” DOL employment services manager Gerri Gage told the Sentinel. “So in a way, it’s a great opportunity for anyone wanting to advance their career, look at job opportunities, you’re going to see all these different organizations with all their different HR and managers there. You get to meet all these neat people, kind of network.”
The job fair will take place Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Harrigan Centennial Hall.
The fair is a chance to find employment, as the name suggests, but Gage noted that it is also an opportunity for Sitkans to see what’s on the table for the future.
“It’s a great way to make a lasting impression there, secure either a job interview on the spot or maybe in the future. So it’s really just going to be like an open floor plan.”
Employers such as Allen Marine, the Hames Corporation, NSRAA, Alaska Airlines, Sitka Tribe of Alaska and the TSA will be present, with about 20 employers registered to attend in total. As of this morning, Gage said there were nine tables still available, and employers interested and reserving one could do so by emailing her at gerri.gage@alaska.gov
“Maybe you’re not looking for a job right now, but down the line you might be,” Gage said. “And then if you come to this, then you already kind of put your foot through the door.”
This is Gage’s first year running the job fair, though the event has occurred previously. On a day to day basis with the Department of Labor, Gage helps people hone their job-seeking skills.
“I’m really here to help the community out. So it’s more of an ‘I’m here to help you help yourself,’ kind of situation when it comes to job seekers,” she said. “If anyone needs any assistance when it comes to getting help with their resumes or their cover letters looking for employment, I’m definitely the one that they can reach out to, and I can help them with that.”
She recommended people coming to Wednesday’s job fair come dressed for possible interviews.

Ten years ago jazz enthusiasts in Sitka took a huge leap of faith when they booked big-name talent for a concert. “It was just Mike Kernin and I wanting to do something neat for the kids,” said Brad Howey, former Sitka High music director, remembering a near sell-out crowd at the Kitty Margolis concert. ... This year’s Sitka Jazz Festival is Thursday and Friday with concerts at the Hames PE Center at Sheldon Jackson College.
