Cable Repair Start Set Back to March 12

Poor weather has again delayed the start date for emergency maintenance on the underwater fiberoptic internet cable to Sitka, with work now expected to start Wednesday, March 12.

GCI corporate communications manager Josh Edge said the delay is due to weather delaying the arrival of the repair ship Cable Innovator at the locaton of the underwater work at a site 10 miles from Angoon.

“Once this maintenance begins, GCI internet service may be interrupted until March 20, when we anticipate repairs will be completed,” Edge said in the latest advisory.

The work originally was scheduled to start March 7.

The cable maintenance project was planned after GCI technical teams monitoring the network flagged an issue recently indicating some damage within the underwater cable.

The problem has not affected internet service in Sitka so far.

GCI is suggesting that customers download shows to watch while home internet service will support only very low bandwidth activities such as email.

The company says it will offer one month of free service to internet, mobile, FastPhone prepaid and Yukon TV customers affected by the cable repair project.
