Sitka city clerk Sara Peterson said today she has certified that a sufficient number of signatures has been submitted on a cruise ship limit initiative petition for a special election to be held on adoption of the proposed ordinance.
Peterson said she has scheduled the election for May 30.

"I have certified this petition to be sufficient as required by Sitka General Code (SGC) 2.80.040 'Initiative and referendum,'" she said in a letter to the petition organizers. She said "613 valid signatures were required and more than 613 valid signatures were certified as sufficient.”
In all, 721 signatures were received, and 22 were determined to be not valid, for a total of 699 valid signatures. The ordinance says the special election is on an ordinance calling for limiting annual cruise ship passengers to 300,000 starting in 2026, daily visitors capped at 4,500, at least one quiet day per week with no port calls, and setting the season from May 1 through Sept. 30.
Petition organizers said they were pleased that the petition was successful, but expressed some disagreement with the date selected for the election.
Peterson said there will be a special Assembly meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday to take action on the election date. That will be the only item on the agenda.
“The period, which is no less than 40 days and no more than 90 days after the petition’s sufficiency, falls between April 22, 2025, and June 11, 2025,” the clerk's letter to Small Town SOUL said.
The ordinance sets the special election date for May 30, with first reading Tuesday, and final reading - if there are no major changes - on March 25.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the scheduled maintenance of GCI’s fiberoptic cable starting March, 13th. CCTHITA’s public-spirited response to the outage is inspiring.
