First Aid, CPR
Training on Tap
UAS-Sitka Campus, Office of Continuing Education, is offering American Heart Association first aid and CPR training 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 7, Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and 23.
Training fulfills OSHA and Coast Guard Requirements. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive Heartsaver cards.
Class is limited to 10 students. The $90 cost includes book. For more information or to register, call 747-7762.
School Supply
Drive on Tap
Steve Dalquist, an Edward Jones financial adviser in Sitka, is supporting a school supplies drive by using his office as a drop-off location for a school supplies drive.
Local residents and businesses may take items to the Edward Jones branch office, 223 Harbor Drive, during regular business hours Aug. 19-29. Call 747-1001 for information.
STA Panel Meets
The Sitka Tribe of Alaska Sitka Marine Mammal Commission will meet 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at STA’s Resource Protection Department office, 429 Katlian St. The public is invited to attend.

Bishop’s Visit
Bishop John Lokwango will speak at the First Presbyterian Church at both noon and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
Tonight’s meeting has been canceled due to flight changes.
Alaska Day Panel
Meets Aug. 20
Alaska Day Festival coordinators will meet 6:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at Centennial Hall.
Planning continues for the 2013 mid-October commemoration of the 1867 purchase transfer of Russian claim in Alaska to the United States.
Celebrating 50 years of the Alaska Marine Highway System will be the theme this year.
Persons having comments about festival activities and new volunteers are invited to attend the meetings or contact Chairman Ted Allio at 747-5124 or Schedule Coordinator Elaine Strelow at 747-3469. The festival’s mailing address is PO Box 1355, Sitka, and its website is alaskadayfestival.org.
Digital Program

In addition to regularly scheduled ranger-led programs, Sitka National Historical Park will host a special evening program this week, ‘‘Digitally Preserving the Russian Bishop’s House,’’ 7 p.m. Wednesday in the visitor center.
SNP Ranger Michael Hess will offer a look at how architects used computer modeling and a 3D laser scanner to document, measure, and preserve the 170-year-old Russian Bishop’s House for a special collection in the Library of Congress.

Photo caption: Mary Lou Colliver presents Sitka Fire Dept. Acting Chief Dave Swearingen a check for $325 to help restore the 1926 Chevrolet fire truck originally purchased by Art Franklin. Colliver donated the money after her business, Colliver Shoes, borrowed the truck to use during Moonlight Madness. The truck is in need of an estimated $20,000 worth of restoration work, Swearingen said.

Sitka Community Hospital Administrator Martin Tirador and hospital board chairman Lawrence Porter told the Assembly Tuesday about the need for a new hospital to replace the existing 18-year-old one. The cost would be about $6.89 million with $2.2 million of that required locally.
