Sitka Skippers
    Beginners Sought
    The Sitka Skippers jump rope team announces fall beginner class registration 4-6 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School gym
    The cost is $100. Participants must be able to demonstrate 20 jumps in a row. Ropes will be provided.
    Practices will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays in the KGH gym until Christmas break.

    AFS is Topic
    Of Presentation
    Julia Smith, a 24-year volunteer with AFS, will provide a short informational presentation, and past exchange students will be available for questions and answers, 7-8 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Sitka High library.
    Families interested in sending a child on an international exchange or in hosting a student in Sitka are being encouraged to attend.

    Heads-Up on
    Start of School
    The Sitka Police Department is reminding motorists to drive with caution beginning Wednesday, the first day of school.
    School zones and the bus routes will again be active during the mornings and afternoons.
    ‘‘Be extra attentive around the elementary schools where smaller children are going to be present, and around the bus stops,’’ SPD Lt. Barry Allen said. ‘‘Smaller children may not be visible as they walk between cars and around other visual obstructions. The smaller children tend to be the most active in the mornings and the most eager to get home in the afternoons. They may not be paying close attention to vehicles on the roadways.’’

    Health Summit
    Planning Slated
     Ideas are being sought for the Sitka Health Summit’s annual planning day 8:30-4 p.m. Sept. 27 in Sweetland Hall on the SJ Campus.
    Community members will brainstorm answers to this year’s workshop question, “what inspiring and health promoting idea deserves Sitka’s attention in the next 365 days.”
    Participants will evaluate and select two community wellness initiatives to become official 2013-2014 Health Summit goals. Each new goal will receive an afternoon of facilitated action planning, be included in the post-summit press release, get $1,500 in start- up funds, and get the credibility that comes from being democratically selected at an open public meeting, organizers said.
    Past Health Summit goals have included: becoming the first officially recognized bicycle friendly community in Alaska; starting the Sitka Farmers Market; completing the Choose Respect mural; starting the Fish To Schools program, revitalizing downtown Sitka; and doing a community food assessment.              Lunch will be provided for planners who RSVP to Clara Gray at 966-8936 by Sept. 20.     Sealaska Seeks
    Native Artists
    Sealaska Heritage Institute invites artists and fashion designers to submit original pieces for a fashion show at the 2014 Tináa Art Auction, to be held Feb. 1 in Juneau.
    The fashion show will be a major feature of the evening and will be an opportunity for artists and designers to showcase their work on the runway at this high-profile event.

    T’ai Chi Chih Practice by the Sea will meet 10 a.m. Sept. 7 behind Kettleson Library on the water side. All are invited to participate. It  is not a class.


    Sitka Fellows to
    Present Works
    The Sitka Fellows Program will host an open studio 5-7 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Yaw Building on the SJ Campus. Readings and performances will be at 6 p.m.
    Wine and cheese will be served. The public is invited to attend.
    Fellows participating are: Bes Young, photographer and videographer; Ben Seretan, electric guitar player and singer; Sarah DeLappe, playwright; Jarrett Moran, art critic and filmmaker; Zoë Ballering, fiction writer; Marcus Gruber, illustrator; and Christian Ervin, interaction designer and programmer.

Lindy Eliason, daughter of George and Tammy Eliason, was married to Kory Hansen, son of Tammee Hansen and John and Erin Hansen, all of Sitka, on Aug. 18.     Sitka Fair Addition
    The Sitka ‘‘State’’ Fair has announced an addition to its winners listing published Friday in the Sentinel.
    Carol Field received a blue ribbon for her felted pieces in the Crafts division, 18 and older.

    ANB/ANS Plan
    For Convention
    The Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood Grand Camp Convention will be held Oct. 9-11 in Yakutat.
    In preparation for convention business, ANB Camp 1 and ANS Camp 4 will convene a resolutions committee meeting 5:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at the ANB Founders Hall.
    Members and others interested persons are invited to attend.


    Herring Festival
    Meeting on Tap
    Sitka Tribe of Alaska will hold an organizational meeting for a March Herring Festival 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at the STA Resource Protection Department, 429 Katlian Street.

    Class to be Held
    Sitka Community Hospital and Mountainside Family Healthcare will offer a one-day childbirth education class 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 7. To register call 747-1722 or go to the Mountainside Family Healthcare Facebook page.

    Roller Derby
    Training Set
    Sitka Sound Slayers will host a roller derby referee and non-skating official training clinic 1-3 p.m.  and 6-8 p.m. Sept. 7 and 9 a.m.-noon  Sept. 8 at the Hames Center. The cost is $25.
    Two referees from Anchorage, Tundra Wookie and Brohican, will join Sitka derby referees F. Scott and Marty Pants for training and instruction on how to host a competitive derby bout.
    Both skating and non-skating referees are needed. Attendance is open to all Sitkans and skaters from Southeast Alaska who are relatively new to roller derby. Beginning skills will be taught.
