WHALE FOUND – A dead 30-foot-long juvenile humpback whale floats near the western shore of Kruzof Island Thursday. Jeff Feldpausch, resource protection director at the Sitka Tribe of Alaska, was notified of the dead whale by a troller in the area and he in turn notified local whale biologist Jan Straley. With STA’s help Straley collected samples from the whale to send to a NOAA lab to find the cause of death. She said the animal appeared to have been dead for a while and noted some post-mortum bite marks. (Photo by Mike Smith)
