Students Sought to
    Solve Problems
    Fourth- and fifth-grade students are invited to join a Future Problem Solvers team.
    Students will apply their imagination and thinking skills to some of the significant issues facing the world today and of the future. Trained coaches will teach a six-step process to teams of three to five students so they can interact and solve problems on their own.
    ‘‘The process is used nationwide and is designed to help kids become rich and sophisticated thinkers,’’ organizers said.
    The international topics they will be discussing are land transportation, desertification and surveillance society.
    –Land Transportation: innovative and efficient transportation has been the inspiration for inventions and new technologies for hundreds of years. What new methods of land transportation may be introduced, and how might they fit into our everyday lives?
    –Desertification: discussing desert-like conditions that exist in regions of the world. What will be the effect on lifestyles and livelihoods as changes resulting from desertification occur?
    –Surveillance Society: People are increasingly being watched. Should the need for public and personal safety outweigh an individual’s right to personal privacy?
    Teams will meet one hour per week and some independent work will be expected. Those wanting more information may call 747-8710. The group will start Sept. 10. Students should register by Sept. 9 to be included.

    Sept. 25 Event
    An AFS informational event will be held 7-8 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Sitka High School library.
    Julia Smith, a 24-year volunteer with AFS, will provide a short informational presentation, and past exchange students will be available for questions. Families interested in sending a child on an international exchange or in hosting a student in Sitka are being encouraged to attend.

    Exhibitors, Auction
    Items being Sought
    Southeast Conference will hold its annual meeting Sept. 16-19 in Sitka and is seeking auction items and exhibitors.
    As part of the event, an auction is being held to benefit Southeast Alaska students with scholarships, and, a limited number of exhibit tables are available for local organizations and businesses to showcase their efforts and products.

    Youth Advocates
    Board to Meet
    Youth Advocates of Sitka board will meet 5:15-7 p.m. Sept. 9 at 805 Lincoln Street.
    The meeting is open to the public. Board members are also being sought. Contact Annette at 747-3687 for more information.

    Sept. 7 Koo.eex
    Location Change
    The L’uknax.adi (Coho Clan) Koo.eex for invited guests will be held noon Sept. 7 at Centennial Hall.
    Invited guests are being reminded of this change in location and time.

    Coho Clan Meets
    Members of the Coho Clan will have a potluck dinner 5:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Swan Lake Senior Center.
    All Coho Clan members are being encouraged to attend and to take a hot dish, salad or beverage to share. The group will discuss Saturday’s potlatch.

    Woman’s Club Meets
    Sitka Woman’s Club will meet noon Sept. 7 at the Homeport Eatery, 209 Lincoln Street.
    ‘‘We are 65 years young and will welcome any new interested members,’’ said President Robin Shull.

    CEO to Speak
    Sitkans are invited to join the Sitka Community Hospital Auxiliary for lunch noon Sept. 10 in the hospital classroom on the lower floor two doors from the Basement bistro.
    Following the business meeting, CEO Hugh Hallgren will give an update on plans and new offerings at the hospital.

    Forms Available
    Sitka Native Education Program is accepting registration forms for kindergarten through fifth grades. Middle and high school registrations will be announced.
    Those wanting to register a child may stop by 304 Baranof Street 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Registration forms may be found online at www.sitkaschools.org. Call 747-4968 with questions.

    Book Group Reads
    The Women’s Book Group will discuss ‘‘Flight Behavior’’ by Barbara Kingsolver and meet at the Pioneers Home Chapel 7 p.m. Sept. 10.
    All women are invited. Titles to be read for the remainder of the season will be selected at the first meeting, and participants are invited to offer suggestions. Call Dorothy at 747-3412 with questions.

    Friends of NRA
    Dinner on Tap
    The Sitka Chapter of the Friends of the NRA will hold its 12th annual fundraising dinner and auction at Centennial Hall on Sept. 28.
    Attendees will have the chance to win guns, sporting goods, artwork and other items.
    ‘‘Pull out your western attire and join the fun,’’ organizers said.
    Tickets are available at Orion Sporting Goods and NAPA. Seating is limited.
    Those who purchase an early bird package by Sept. 21 have the chance to win a Kel-tek 9mm pistol.

    Coho Salmon at
    School Lunch
    Coho salmon will be offered for school lunch every second and fourth Wednesday of each month at Keet Gooshi Heen, Blatchley Middle and Sitka High schools starting Sept. 11.
    Lunch is made possible through the Fish to Schools program from donations from local commercial fisherman and the Sitka Conservation Society.

    Quilters Guild
    To Offer Class
    Sue Wilson, a Judy Niemeyer certified instructor, will instruct foundation piecing techniques to make the ‘‘Glacier Star’’ quilt. The four-day class runs Sept. 14-15 and Sept. 28-29.
    The cost is $130 for OWQ members  and $160 for non-members. Sign up is at Abby’s Reflection Apparel and Quilt Shop.

    Library Expansion
    Discussion Tonight
    The public is invited to attend the ‘‘unveiling’’ of the proposed plans for the library expansion submitted by MRV Architects of Juneau, the firm selected for the library expansion project, 7 p.m. tonight at Centennial Hall.
    The choice has been narrowed to two floor plans and the public is being encouraged to comment and vote for their favorite. The library expansion working group will meet 5:30-6:45 at  Centennial Hall to review and discuss the plans. The public may attend this meeting to observe the discussion.

    Quilt Trunk Show
    Slated for Sept. 13
    The Ocean Wave Quilters Guild invites the public to a quilt trunk show presented by Sue Wilson, a Judy Niemeyer certified instructor in foundation-pieced quilts, 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at Grace Harbor Church on Halibut Point Road.

    Baranof School
    Photos Sept. 12
    Baranof Elementary School will have school photos taken the morning of Sept. 12. Photo packets will be sent home Sept. 6 and must be returned to the classroom teacher on or before Sept. 12.

    Parking Changes
    At Sitka High
    Sitka High School’s front parking lot – the lot on the south side of the building – will be closed to traffic all day Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7 for repairs and re-painting.
    All traffic, including buses, will be using the rear parking lot – neaq the Performing Arts Center – for drop-off and pick-up.
