Carnival Oct. 26
At Betty Eliason
Games, activities, a cupcake walk and spooky stories will be part of the 3-6 p.m. Oct. 26 Carnival event at Betty Eliason Child Care Center, 106 Lincoln Street.
Tickets are $3 a child or two for $5. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Reception Set
Sheldon Jackson Museum will host a selection of works featured in the 2012 Alaska Positive competition, a biennial photographic competition open to all Alaskans 1-3 p.m. Oct. 12.
The exhibition will be on display until Nov. 30.
Selected for awards were: Juror’s Choice Award ($300), Loren Holmes, Anchorage, ‘‘Butchering the Whale’’; Award of Recognition ($150), Ben Huff, Juneau, ‘‘Mile 250, Idling Trucks, Chandalar Shelf’’; Award of Recognition ($150), Deanna Lampe, Juneau, ‘‘Lost, Found’’; Honorable Mention for ‘‘Body of Work’’: Loren Holmes, Anchorage; Honorable Mention, Douglas Yates, ‘‘Ester, Main Street, Ester, Alaska’’; Honorable Mention, Clark James Mishler, Anchorage, ‘‘Winter Dogs.’’
“Every submission to Alaska Positive 2012 reflects pride in the state’s unique culture, industry and landscape,” said this year’s juror Holly Andres, a professional photographer from Portland, Ore. “The judging process gave me a whole new appreciation for the contemporary Alaskan experience.”
The exhibition has been travelling around the state.
STA CCTC Meets
The Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s Cultural, Customary and Traditional Committee will meet noon Oct. 4 in the STA Resource Protection Department Office at 429 Katlian St.
A light lunch will be provided. The public is invited to attend.
Life Celebration
For Jean Nelson
A Celebration of Life for Jean Nelson, longtime Sitka resident, will be 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Sitka Pioneers Home Chapel.
Jean was a well-known Sitka resident having been a teacher at Sitka High School from 1945 until her retirement in 1972. The family invites all acquaintances, friends and former students to celebrate Jean’s life.
Office Hours for
Kreiss-Tomkins
Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins will hold office hours for Sitkans on Oct. 14. He will be at the Backdoor Cafe from 9 to 11 a.m., and at the Highliner from 1 to 3 p.m. All are welcome to stop in.
Call for Judges
A drama-debate meet is being hosted by Mt. Edgecumbe High School Oct. 11-12. Over 120 judging slots are needed for the tournament and volunteers are being sought.
Schools competing are Sitka High, Juneau Douglas, Thunder Mountain, Ketchikan, Haines, Wrangell and MEHS. Those who can judge an event are asked to call Marcy Drake at 966-3212.
Open Seat on
STA Commission
Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s Kayaani Commission is soliciting letters of interest from community members to fill an open seat on the commission.
Letters must be received in office by Oct. 10. The seat is open to anyone in the community who has an interest in and knowledge of local flora.
The Kayaani Commission is a group concerned with preserving and protecting plants and the traditional ways they are used.

Western Illinois’ Travis Watson was named Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week by the Mid-Continent Conference after a successful campaign in recent individual and relay team events. Watson, a 2000 Sitka High graduate, is a senior in engineering technology. He is the son of Cathy Watson and the late Craig H. Watson.

Marilyn Knapp, president of the Greater Sitka Arts Council, announced today the council will solicit local businesses and individuals for scholarships to be awarded to Sitka students planning to attend the Regional Fine Arts Camp on the Sheldon Jackson College campus in July.
