Fishing Vessel Drill
    Training on Tap
    AMSEA will conduct a one-day fishing vessel drill conductor training course 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 24. It meets the U.S. Coast Guard drill conductor requirements for fishing vessels.
    Course instructor Rick Petersen will cover these topics: cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares, and maydays; man overboard recovery; fire fighting; immersion suits and PFDs; emergency drills; helicopter rescue; life rafts; and abandon ship procedures.
    The cost is $95 for commercial fishermen (after an $80 scholarship from DCCED and NIOSH) and $175 for all others. All mariners are welcome. The course will be conducted at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Rd. Register online, www.amsea.org, or call 747-3287.

    STA Absentee
    Ballots Available
    Sitka Tribe of Alaska tribal citizens may request that absentee ballots be sent by mail through Nov. 17.
    Request forms can be completed at the Election Office at the Sheet’ka Kwáan Naa Kahídi 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. Monday-Friday. or by contacting election supervisor Kerry MacLane, 752-0654, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

    Reuse Center
    Hours Given
    Sitka Community Development Corporation announces the Sitka Reuse Center will be open 5-6:30 p.m.  Wednesday, Oct. 16, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.
    The Reuse Center is a volunteer operation selling donated building materials and is located at 4620 Halibut Point Road, across from the AML barge landing. Without a fence around many of the items, they are operating on an honor system. All items are for sale. Those who are interested in volunteering or donating materials may call Greg Reynolds at 738-5518.

    SCDC to Meet
    The Sitka Community Development Corp. board will meet 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at St. Peter’s See House, downstairs in the Undercroft.
    SCDC is a community supported non-profit working to establish permanently affordable housing in Sitka. The public is invited. For more information call 747-2860.


    Story Time Set
    Preschool story time at Kettleson Memorial Library, will be held 10:30 a.m. Oct. 17. Preschoolers will learn about “Art and Artists.”

    Volunteers Sought
    To Assemble Tables
    Volunteers are needed to assemble new tables and shelving at the ANB  Founders’ Hall for one or two. Call Kerry at 752-0654 to sign up.

    College Fair Set
    For Wednesday
    Students are invited to talk to representatives of more than 40 colleges 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Sitka High School gym.
    UAS-Sitka Campus will have a large display, featuring faculty as well as advisers, and with hands-on opportunities to see the arts, sciences and trade careers available.
    ‘‘Bring a T-shirt or sweatshirt and print on it yourself,’’ UAS said. ‘‘Make your mark as part of a large psychological illustration with Norm Campbell. See an octopus and talk to Reid Brewer, the program manager and professor of fish tech.’’
   
    Corps of Engineers
    Closes Sitka Office
    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers  today announced it will close its regulatory offices, including Sitka’s, due to lack of available federal funding.
    During the closure, regulatory offices will be unable to evaluate individual permit applications, pre-construction notifications for nationwide permits  or regional general permit authorizations, or requests for jurisdictional determinations until after current year funding is received and the offices reopen.
    Those applying for NWP authorizations are reminded that proposed NWP activities that require PCNs must wait 45 days before beginning the activity (see 33 CFR 330.1(e)). Certain NWP PCNs require a written response from USACE before beginning the NWP activity.  More NWP information can be found at http://www.usace.army.mil/Missions/CivilWorks/RegulatoryProgramandPermits/NationwidePermits.aspx.


    Lutherans Host
    Pie, Quilt Sale
    The community is invited to stop at Sitka Lutheran Church on Alaska Day to enjoy a piece of pie or other dessert while visiting with friends and warming up in the lower level fellowship hall at 224 Lincoln Street, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.
    Quilts, table covers and sewn items will be offered by sale or silent auction on the main level of the church on Friday. For more information, call 747-6447 or 747-6525 or 747-3338.

    Class Dismissed
    Sitka School District announces that all schools will be dismissed early on Friday, Oct. 18, in observance of Alaska Day. Lunches will be served.
    Schools will be dismissed as follows: first grade and bus 11:45 a.m.; kindergarten pickup noon; second through fifth grades noon; Pacific High School 12:30 p.m.; Blatchley Middle School 12:45 p.m.; and Sitka High School 12:50 p.m.
    Ventures will be open 7-8:30 a.m. on Oct. 18. No after-school Ventures will be offered as Ventures staff will not be working on that day. Parents will need to pick up students from their classrooms.
    All offices will closed at 1 p.m.

    Museum Closure
    The Sheldon Jackson Museum will be closed on Oct. 18 in observance of Alaska Day.
    Winter hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday will resume Oct. 19.
