STA Absentee
    Voting on Tap
    Absentee ballots may be cast from now through Nov. 10 for the Tribal Council election. Tribal citizens can vote in person at the election office at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi Monday-Friday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m., or by contacting Election Supervisor Kerry MacLane at 747-7388 or 752-0654 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . The Sitka Tribe of Alaska annual Tribal Council election, will be held 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Community House.

    Scholarship On
    Nov. 30 is the deadline to apply for the Waldo Mills Scholarship, given by Sitka Woman’s Club. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a single mother engaged in academic or vocational pursuit to become self-sufficient.

    Awards may be applied towards tuition for Alaska college courses, independent study or correspondence courses. Applicants must reside in Sitka, and may be part-time or full-time students.
    To apply for the scholarship, write a one-page letter describing present situation, and stating educational goals and objectives. Letters should be sent to the Sitka Woman’s Club, 300 Harbor Drive, Sitka, AK 99835.
    Applications must be postmarked by Nov. 30. Scholarships will be awarded in early December. For more information, call Karen at 747-7803.
    The Sitka Woman’s Club is dedicated to serving the community of Sitka by being an organized center of thought and action that champions humanitarian causes, fosters closer personal acquaintances, and provides mutual assistance through social venues that promote the general well-being and prosperity of all with a focus on women and children.            


    Park Board Meets
    The Sitka State Parks Advisory Board will meet 7:30 a.m. Dec. 10 at Centennial Hall. The public is invited.

    Social Security
    Topic of Seminar
    ‘‘Social Security, Your Questions Answered!’’ will be presented 6:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at UAS-Sitka Campus.
    The seminar will examine how Social Security fits into a retirement income plan, when to start taking benefits and how taxes affect benefits.
    The fee is $19, and spouses $10.Steve Dalquist, from Edward Jones, will present a Power Point presentation followed by a question-and-answer period. Call 747-7762 for more information or to register.

    Homebuyers
    Seminar Free
   Alaska Housing and Finance Corporation will offer a free homebuyers information class 6-10 p.m. Nov. 21-22 in Sitka.
    Students will learn the ins and outs of the home-buying process, programs that AHFC offers and other information. The seminar is aimed at those planning to purchase a home. Attendees will receive a $250 voucher that is good toward any AHFC program commitment fee.

    ANB, ANS Meet
    To Install Officers
    The Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 and the Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 will have an installation of new officers 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at the ANB Founders Hall.
    Following the installation will be a potluck dinner for the new officers. Those with questions may call Jean at 623-7355.

    SAFV Board
    Meets Nov. 11
    Sitkans Against Family Violence Board will meet 5:30 p.m. Nov. 11 upstairs at 201 Lincoln Street. The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call 747-3370.

    Drill Conductor
    Training on Tap
    AMSEA is conducting a one-day fishing vessel drill conductor training course 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Nov. 14. The course meets the U.S. Coast Guard drill conductor requirements for fishing vessels.
    Course instructor Rick Petersen will cover topics including: cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares and maydays; man overboard recovery; fire-fighting; immersion suits and PFDs; emergency drills; helicopter rescue; life rafts; and abandon ship procedures.
    The cost is $95 for commercial fishermen (after an $80 scholarship from DCCED and NIOSH) and $175 for all others. All mariners are welcome. The course will be conducted at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road. Registration is available online at www.amsea.org or call 747-3287.
