    Asbestos Online
    Courses Offered
    UAS-Sitka will be holding an eight-hour refresher asbestos online training Dec. 5-18. The class meets the requirements of OSHA, DOL and EPA/HERA.  Cost for the training is $219. For more information, call 747-7786.

    Safety Training
    Offered Dec. 6-7
    Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a one-day fishing vessel safety and drill conductor course Dec. 6-7 at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.
    The course meets training requirements for commercial fishing vessels and is available free to commercial fishermen through funding from the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. The cost is $175 for all others.
    Instructor Mike Morris will cover: cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares and maydays; man overboard recovery, firefighting; immersion suits and PFDs; and emergency drills, helicopter rescue, life rafts and abandon ship procedures.

    Artisans Market
    Events, including live music and prize drawings all three days, have been scheduled for the annual Sitka Artisans Market set Dec. 6-8 at Centennial Hall.
    The grand opening of the market will be 4-6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 when vendors open for business. A drawing for 15 percent off a voucher will be every half hour. The voucher is redeemable at any vendor booth and the difference will be made up by Greater Sitka Arts Council. Value is not to exceed $100.
    On Saturday, Dec. 7, the market will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Also planned are a block carving workshop with Cara Murray 9 a.m.-noon; and a watercolor holiday card workshop with Bayla Laks, 12:30-2:30 p.m. Gingerbread creations are due by 1 p.m. for judging and awarding of prizes.     Continuing on Saturday will be a  craft table hosted by Mt. Edgecumbe Honor Society 2:30-5 p.m. and a writer-led discussion and workshop with Judy Ferguson 5-6 p.m.
    On Sunday, Dec. 8, the market will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
    A block carving workshop with Cara Murray will be 9 a.m.-noon.  A special craft table hosted by Mt. Edgecumbe Honor Society will be open 12:30-4 p.m.
    Sitka Artisans Market is funded by the City and Borough of Sitka, the Alaska State Council on the Arts and sponsors ALPS Federal Credit Union, Bayne Business Works, Sitka Dental Clinic, Foreign Automotive, SEARHC, AC Lakeside Value Center, Hames Corporation and Westmark.

    Wild Foods
    Potluck Slated
    Sitka Conservation Society will host its annual Wild Foods Potluck 5-7:30 p.m. Dec. 8.
    Attendees are asked to take a dish that features fished, foraged, hunted, or cultivated ingredients from Southeast.
    Prizes from the Sitka Artist Coop, Mountain Miss, the Fisheye Gallery, Russell’s and more will be offered for Best Dish, Best Side and Best Dessert, and subsistence stories will be shared. For more information contact Ray Friedlander or Mary Wood at 747-7509.

    Museum to Hold
    Fundraising Sale
    The Sitka Historical Museum will hold a holiday fundraising sale 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 29 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 30 at Centennial Hall.
    All are invited to preview the new museum layout. Discounts will be on most of the museum store’s merchandise, including apparel, books, art and children’s items.
    Museum members receive 10 percent off purchases. Those who mention they saw it in the Sentinel will receive an additional 5 percent off. No admission will be charged. Winter hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Call  747-6455 for more information.

    The Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 will have a regular meeting 6:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at the ANB Founders Hall. All are welcome.

    Discovery Days
    At Science Center
    The Sitka Sound Science Center  introduces Discovery Days, a free program for annual pass holders 10 a.m.-noon Saturdays. The Nov. 23 theme will be ‘‘Fossils.’’
    Members are invited to take their families to the event to explore the fossil collection and make fossils.  Annual passes are available at the door.
    Upcoming Discovery Days activities are planned.

    Reuse Center
    Closed for Winter
    The building material Reuse Center is closed for the winter.
    Volunteers expressed appreciation to those who took items or contributed materials. They ask that building material donations be saved until the center reopens in the spring as most items donated last winter became unusable in the harsh weather.

    Cultural Panel
    Meets Nov. 22
    The Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s Cultural Customary and Traditional Committee will meet noon Nov. 22 in the STA Resource Protection office at 429 Katlian Street. The public is invited to attend.

Photo caption: Mary Lou Colliver presents Sitka Fire Dept. Acting Chief Dave Swearingen a check for $325 to help restore the 1926 Chevrolet fire truck originally purchased by Art Franklin. Colliver donated the money after her business, Colliver Shoes, borrowed the truck to use during Moonlight Madness.  The truck is in need of an estimated $20,000 worth of restoration work, Swearingen said.

November 1974

Sitka Community Hospital Administrator Martin Tirador and hospital board chairman Lawrence Porter told the Assembly Tuesday about the need for a new hospital to replace the existing 18-year-old one. The cost would be about $6.89 million with $2.2 million of that required locally.
