Herring Rock
    Blessing Tuesday
    The Kiksadi Clan has announced that the Blessing of Herring Rock  has been rescheduled to 11 a.m. March 25 at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi.
     All are invited to attend. Questions can be directed to John at 738-5540.

    Earthquake
    Series Slated
    KCAW will run its four-part story series today through Thursday of the 50th anniversary of the largest earthquake ever recorded in North America.
    The magnitude 9.2 quake, also known as the Good Friday Earthquake, occurred near Prince William Sound. Sitkans who were close to the epicenter told personal accounts. These stories will air during KCAW morning and evening newscasts.

    Elks Dinner to
    Benefit Skippers
    A benefit dinner for the Sitka Skippers Jump Rope Team will be 5-8 p.m. March 30 at the Sitka Elks Lodge.
    Takeout dinners start at 6 p.m.
    The menu will be burgers and fries with a topping bar including bacon.Jump rope demonstrations will be given throughout the evening.
    A dessert auction features gourmet desserts from local businesses. The fundraiser will help the team travel to nationals in California. Events held at the Elks Lodge are for members and invited guests.

    Card of Thanks
    I personally thank each and every one of you for your heartfelt sympathy at the passing of Louis J. Licari, known to so many as ‘‘Louie.’’
    He was a wonderful guy and will be missed by many, including his wife of 55 years. So many calls received said, ‘‘Our thoughts and prayers are with you’’ and I know they are.

    Class on Tap
    The workshop ‘‘Pushing your Limits and Knowledge of Photography’’ will be offered 6-7:15 p.m. March 27 and April 3 and noon-1 p.m. March 29 and April 5 in Blatchley Middle School, Room 208.
    The class requires access to a camera, basic knowledge of photography and access to some form of photo-editing software. The cost is $30 and registration is open at Sitka Community School. Call 747-8670 for more information.
 
    Herring Festival
    Fun Run Slated
    Sitka Community School’s Herring Festival Fun Run is slated 11 a.m. April 5. Registration for the 2.5-mile fun run and 1-mile fun walk is open at the Sitka Community Schools office or will be available 10:30-11 a.m. the day of the run in front of Centennial Hall.
    The pre-registration fee is $2, pre-registration with a T-shirt is $12, registration on the day of the run with a T-shirt is $15. The family rate, with three T-shirts, is $30.

    SSSC Offers
    Summer Camps
    Sitka Sound Science Center is offering several summer camps. Registration is available on the website www.sitkascience.org.
    Six camps and a kayak expedition are slated for the summer.  Camps are offered to children entering grades 1-12.  Some of the camps include Creepy, Crawly Camp, The Art of Nature and Trash Camp.

    Babies and Books
    Program on Tap
    The Babies and Books program, for infants to age 3, will be held 10:30 a.m. March 29 at Kettleson Memorial Library. The barn dance event, hosted by Dorothy Orbison, is open to the public. For more information, call the library at 747-8708.

    Discovery Days
    Event at SSSC
    Sitka Sound Science Center Discovery Days will explore the base of the aquatic food chain, plankton and seaweed, 10 a.m.-noon March 29.
    ‘‘They’re blooming and fueling the excitement in the ecosystem,’’ SSSC said. ‘‘We’ll have the microscopes out to discover these tiny critters and make some seaweed bookmarks.’’
    Discovery Days are annual pass-holder events, but passes are available at the door.

    SCDC Meeting
    Set for March 27
    The Sitka Community Development Corporation announces its March regular meeting 5-8 p.m. March 27 at the Sitka Pioneers Home Manager’s House.
    SCDC is a community supported non-profit working to establish permanently affordable housing in Sitka. Members of the public are invited to attend. For more information call 747-2860.

    Monthly Grind Set
    The Sitka Monthly Grind announces the Classy “Classic” Grind 7 p.m. April 5 at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi.
    The audience is being encouraged to attend in their concept of  “classy” attire including top hats and cane to tiara and high heels to bibs and straw hat.
    The philosophy of the Monthly Grind is affordable, non-political, and family entertainment. Tickets are sold in advance at Old Harbor Books. The cost is $5 for adults and $1 for children. Those who take a plate of homemade desserts will get the price of their ticket returned.
    ‘‘Bring your cup to help reduce the trash,’’ organizers said. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.


    Emblem Club
    Meet Postponed
    The Sitka Emblem Club has postponed its March 27 social until April 10. Supreme President Jackie Fanzo will be visiting the Sitka lodge at that time.

    BIHA to Meet
    Baranof Island Housing Authority board of commissioners will meet 5 p.m. March 25 at 245 Katlian Street. The public is invited to attend.
