Preschool Registers
    Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool registration has started for the upcoming school year.
    Classes are available 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday for ages 3-5 years. Tuition assistance is available.

    After-School
    Program Slated
    Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool’s kindergarten after-school program registration has begun for the upcoming school year.
    The Kindergarten Discovery Club program is slated 1:30-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday for ages 5-6 years who are in kindergarten or being home-schooled.

    Brassica Planting
    Workshop May 7
    The Sitka Local Foods Network reminds gardeners that it’s time to plant broccoli, cauliflower and other brassicas.
    Linda Wilson will present a short workshop on planting them 4 p.m.  May 7 at 3509 Halibut Point Road.
    Parking is limited, so attendees may want to consider walking, riding a bike, taking the bus or carpooling.     Swing Dance
    Lessons Offered
    A swing dance lessons benefit for Sitkans Against Family Violence is slated 8 p.m. April 30 at the Bayview Pub.
    The $5 suggested donation benefits SAFV. It is hosted by Alan Maloney.

    ANB/ANS Meet
    A combined meeting of Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 and Alaska
Native Sisterhood Camp 4 is set 6:30 p.m. April 28 at the ANB Founders Hall.
    Vice President Bob Sam is scheduled to chair the meeting. A second reading of the proposed by-laws is planned.  ANB and ANS Grand Camp first vice presidents are scheduled to be in attendance. Those with questions may call Nels at 738-2205.

    Core Class Offered
    Sitka Community Schools will offer a new session of Core exercise classes Tuesdays and Thursdays May 1-June 26 in the Keet Gooshi Heen gym. Class time is 5:30-6:15 p.m. May 1-8 and 5:15-6 p.m. May 13-June 26. The cost is $68.

    Blue Lake Project
    Video Released
    A three-minute video of the Blue Lake Expansion Project construction progress has been launched.
    The project is just over one year into its two-year timeline. The video features project specific information,  shots of workers, heavy equipment including the largest crane in Alaska, and explosions.
    It was launched at the recent Assembly meeting and can be viewed online at www.bluelakeexpansion.com.
 
    Writing Workshop
    Set for Saturday
    Island Institute writers-in-residence Carol Green and Tamie Harkins will teach a writing workshop 9 a.m.-4 p.m. April 26 in Room 107 of the Yaw Art Center on the SJ Campus.
    The workshop, titled “Calling Out the Meaning,” will focus on how to make abstract concepts concrete and how to give descriptive details deeper meaning.
    Harkins and Creen will offer a series of exercises to help participants understand and practice these skills. Writers of all levels are welcome. The workshop fee is $30 for adults and $15 for high school and college students. Those interested can sign up in advance with the Island Institute by calling 747-3794.

    Holocaust to be
    Marked Monday
    Holocaust Remembrance will be observed 6 p.m. April 28 at Totem Square. The public is invited to commemorate the day and bear witness to genocides, both past and present, organizers said.
    Attendees are invited to take readings, poems or thoughts to share. The Russian Orthodox Church will toll the bells at 6 p.m. to mark the event.

    Babies and Books
    Event Rescheduled
    Saturday’s Babies and Books program has been rescheduled until May 24.
