For Fred Tamura
Fred ‘‘Mr. Miyagi’’ Tamura, 72, passed away in Honolulu, Hawaii, after a short battle with cancer, Sitka friends have learned.
He was a seasonal Sitka resident.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 19, at Ernie’s Old Time Saloon. The time will be posted in Friday’s Sentinel.
Friends are asked to take side dishes and ‘‘good stories to share about our friend Fred,’’ friends said.

Services July 25 for
‘Corky’ Stewart
Chester “Corky” Stewart, 76, of Sitka lost his battle with cancer on July 9, surrounded by family who loved him dearly. A celebration of life will be held 5-7 p.m. on July 25 at the Sitka Moose Lodge.
A full obituary will be printed in Wednesday’s Sentinel.
Community Picnic
Planned by STA
The Sitka Tribe of Alaska community picnic will be held noon-3 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at the Halibut Point Recreation main shelter.
Games and events planned are races for all age groups, button and berry jar guessing games, bingo (in Tlingit), and a salmon filleting contest. Also offered is a smoked salmon competition for all.
The menu includes picnic and barbecue fare, as well as traditional Native food. Guests are being encouraged to take picnic side dishes to share.
All are invited to take advantage of the free transportation provided through “the RIDE” from many locations throughout Sitka. The schedule for transportation will be posted in town, and available on the STA website: www.sitkatribe.org.
The picnic is a no-smoking event open to the community. Those with questions can contact staff at 747-3207.
Sitkans Can Dance
Contest Nov. 22
The Greater Sitka Arts Council and Sitka Studio of Dance will present Sitkans Can Dance Nov. 22.

Tribal Council Meets
The Sitka Tribe of Alaska Tribal Council will meet 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, in the Sheet’ka Kwáan Naa Kahídi. Tribal citizens and interested community members are invited.
Pioneers Plan
Annual Picnic
The annual Pioneers of Alaska picnic will be held noon Saturday, July 19, at Pioneer Park. Those attending pioneers are being asked to take their favorite picnic dishes and desserts, and folding chairs.
Guests are welcome.
Pioneers helping to set up should be at Pioneer Park by 11 a.m.
Hiking Club Meets
Southeast Alaska Independent Living’s Senior Hiking Club will meet at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, at Swan Lake Senior Center and return by 11:30 a.m.
The cost is $5 and includes transportation, snacks, water and trekking poles. Those planning on attending or with questions may call 747-6859.
Tlingit Carver
At SJ Museum
Tlingit carver Samuel Sheakley will demonstrate his art at the Sheldon Jackson Museum July 19-26.
The museum said that Jennie Wheeler, Tlingit skin sewer, will not be demonstrating her art July 12-18. Her visit will be rescheduled.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
