    Troll Fishery
    Update Given
    Following the annual assessment of coho salmon run strength on Aug. 5, a summer troll announcement will be made that afternoon concerning dates for the troll coho closure and the second chinook salmon opening.
    The Alaska Department of Fish and Game said that the troll fishery will be closed for a minimum of two days beginning 11:59 p.m. Aug. 9. When the fishery reopens, a  short king salmon retention period will open for a pre-determined number of days to target the remaining troll allocation of kings, the department said.

    Potluck Cruise Set
    By St. Gregory’s
    St. Gregory’s annual potluck cruise aboard an Allen Marine vessel is slated 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, with boarding at Crescent Harbor.
    The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for children. Space is limited. Those attending are asked to take a dish to share for 30 people.

    Social Security
    Topic of Talk
    ‘‘Social Security, Your Questions Answered’’ is the topic of a program 6-7 p.m. Aug. 13 at UAS-Sitka Campus.
    The seminar will examine how Social Security fits into a retirement income plan, when to start taking benefits, and how taxes affect benefits. The

    Oil Heat Burner
    Class at UAS
    The advanced oil heating troubleshooting class is listed 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 8-13 at the UAS-Sitka Campus.
    The course content includes oil burner pumps with solenoid valves and two stage firing, solid state igniters, wiring and troubleshooting programming microprocessor relays.
    Much of the course time will be spent in the field, with hands-on training. Testing for the silver certificate will take place on Saturday. The fee is $699. Call 747-7762 for more information or to register.

    ADT&PF to Host
    Public Meetings
    The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will host a series of public meetings during August and September to gather public comment on the Draft Southeast Alaska Transportation Plan.
    An open house, 5:30-6:30 p.m., will be followed by a public meeting, 6:30-8:30 p.m., on Aug. 20 at Centennial Hall in the Maksoutoff Room.
    The plan is available for review online at www.dot.alaska.gov/satp.

Joe Lewis Dies
Longtime Sitka fisherman Joe Lewis passed away peacefully today. He was 83.
An obituary will be published later this week.

    Mr. Gray died July 25 at SEARHC-Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital.

    Sitka Fine Arts Camp Gets
    NEA Grant for ’15 Event
    National Endowment for the Arts  plans to award 66 Our Town grants and Alaska Arts Southeast Sitka Fine Arts Camp is one of the recipients.
    It will receive $100,000 to create and host a Festival of Arts and Sciences on the Sheldon Jackson Campus during summer 2015.
    “I am thrilled about this exciting opportunity for our community,” said Alaska Arts Southeast Sitka Fine Arts Camp Executive Director Roger Schmidt, “Over the last few years, Sitka has seen an incredible renaissance of arts, sciences and culture. I hope that this project will serve as an economic engine towards the future growth of our community and help to cement Sitka’s role as one of the top arts destinations in Alaska.”
    The festival will bring together artists and scientists with local experts to participate in collaborative residencies and to host workshops, performances, demonstrations, and presentations on the former Sheldon Jackson College campus.
    The collaboration between artists and scientists will stimulate creativity, activate the campus with arts activities, and connect the broader continent to the unique Alaskan perspective, Alaska Arts Southeast said. Native Alaskan artists and artists from across the nation will participate in the festival and reside on the campus during August.
    Partners will include Alaska Arts Southeast, City and Borough of Sitka, Sitka Convention and Visitors Bureau, Sitka Sound Science Center, Island Institute and Alaska State Museum.
    “Alaska Arts Southeast Sitka Fine Arts Camp demonstrates the best in creative community development and whose work will have a valuable impact on its community,” NEA Chairman Jane Chu said. “Through Our Town funding, arts organizations continue to spark vitality that support neighborhoods and public spaces, enhancing a sense of place for residents and visitors alike.”
    ‘‘This year’s Our Town projects demonstrate again that excellent art is as fundamental to a community’s success as land-use, transportation, education, housing, infrastructure, and public safety, helping build stronger communities that are diverse in geography and character,’’ Chu said in a press release.
    This year’s grants total $5.073 million and reach 38 states in the Our Town program’s fourth year of funding
    Since its inception in 2011 and including these projects, the NEA will have awarded 256  grants totaling more than $21 million in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
    The NEA received 275 applications for Our Town this year. Recommended grant amounts ranged from $25,000 to $200,000.

    Fish Skin Bags on Display
    At Sheldon Jackson Museum
    Examples of students’ fish skin bags and containers will be on display at the Sheldon Jackson Museum during the Sitka Seafood Festival Aug. 2-3.
    The students’ work is mostly the result of their attending a weeklong fish skin sewing class with Athabascan artist-in-resident Audrey Armstrong  earlier this summer at the museum.
    Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during the summer. Admission will still be collected Aug. 2-3. General admission is $5, seniors ages 65 and older $4, and ages 18 and under and members of either Friends of the Sheldon Jackson Museum or Friends of the Alaska State Museum are admitted free.

    Brewing Company
    Supports YAS
    Youth Advocates of Sitka will have a community night fundraiser at Baranof Island Brewing Company 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 30.
    A percentage of the profits from the night will go to YAS programs and services.
    ‘‘Thank you for supporting the mental health of Alaska’s youths and their families, YAS said.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
