John Timmer
    Memorial Set
    A memorial for John Timmer will be held at the main shelter at Halibut Point Recreation Area Aug. 2.
    It will be an all day event until 4 p.m. The service will be held at 2 p.m. Attendees are invited to take a salad, side dish or dessert to share if they wish.
    ‘‘And please bring a good story or remembrance of our friend John,’’ friends said.

    Skateboard
    Design Taught
     Sheldon Jackson Museum will offer a free Formline Design via Skateboard Design workshop Saturday, Aug. 30, and Sunday, Aug. 31. The workshop will be taught by Rico Worl, Tlingit artist, skateboarder, and owner of the skateboard company Trickster Skateboards.
    A student reception will be late in the day on Aug. 31 at which time students will share their skateboard works of art with the general public and the artist will talk about skateboarding in Native culture and share some biographical information about himself and his work.
    The workshop is for ages 12-17. It is free and students leave with a complete, functional skateboard with their own formline designs on it at the workshop’s end. Space is limited and students must register and be able to attend both sessions and the student reception. For more information and to register a child for the free program, call 747-8981.

    Offers Activities
    Sitka National Historical Park offers daily guided programs teaching the public about the park’s natural and cultural resources.
    Ranger-guided schedules this week are:
    –Sunday, Aug. 3: 9 a.m. Battle Walk and 10 a.m. Totem Walk;
    –Monday, Aug. 4: 9 a.m. Battle Walk; 10 a.m. Totem Walk; and noon Discovery Talk ‘‘Fungus Among Us!’’
    –Tuesday, Aug. 5: 9 a.m. Battle Walk, 10 a.m.  Totem Walk, 12:30 p.m.  Discovery Talk ‘‘Banana Slugs’’;
    –Wednesday, Aug. 6: 9 a.m.  Battle Walk; 10 a.m. Totem Walk; noon Totem Walk; and 1 p.m. Discovery Talk ‘‘Sea Otters’’;
    –Thursday, Aug. 7: 9 a.m. Battle Walk; 10 a.m. Totem Walk; noon Totem Walk; 1 p.m. Discovery Talk ‘‘Pinks and Chums and Kings, Oh My! Salmon in the Indian River’’;
    –Friday, Aug. 8: 9 a.m. Battle Walk; 10 a.m. Totem Walk; noon Discovery Talk ‘‘Fungus Among Us!’’; 1 p.m. Discovery Talk ‘‘Climate Change’’; and 1 p.m. community weed pull;
    –Saturday, Aug. 9: 9 a.m. Battle Walk; 10 a.m. Totem Walk; noon Totem Walk; 2:30 p.m. Discovery Talk ‘‘Bentwood Boxes.’’
    All ranger-led tours meet at the Sitka visitor center on Lincoln Street.

    Moose Lodge
    Picnic Aug. 10
    The annual Sitka Moose Lodge picnic will be held 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Halibut Point Recreation Area main shelter.
    Hamburgers, hot dogs and soda will be provided. All are invited to take a dish to share. Games for children and a horseshoe competition for adults will start at noon.
    Members who need a ride are asked to be at the Centennial Hall for a bus ride at 10:30 a.m. A return ride will be provided back to town at 2:30 and 3:15 p.m.

    Volunteers Working
    At Lutheran Church
    August volunteers at Sitka Lutheran Church are Colleen and Jerry Westberg.
    Jerry focuses on teaching Sunday school and working as a counselor in a youth camp. He has a background in gymnastics, electrical engineering and teaching.
    Colleen’s time is spent raising four boys, teaching, being a church organiist and, most recently she and her husband enjoy traveling.
    Sunday morning worship service is at 10:30 a.m. and on Wednesday’s all are invited to a 6 p.m. soup supper followed by a short prayer service.

    Park Advisory Meets
    The Sitka State Parks Advisory Board will meet 7:30 a.m. Aug. 12 at the Centennial Hall. The public is invited to attend.

 

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
