Trombone
    Recital Set
    For Aug. 21
George Jones will present a summer trombone recital 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Performing Arts Center. He will be accompanied by pianist Susan Reed and trombonist Roger Schmidt.
The evening will cover an array of time periods and genres. Pieces range from the baroque period to the ’70s. A small donation is requested to cover the cost of the hall.
After graduating from Sitka High School Jones went on to study trombone performance at the Oberlin Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio.
‘‘Throughout high school I tried many things beyond academics including cross country, soccer, student counsel, and drama debate forensics,’’ Jones said. ‘‘However, the thing I found most inspiring was the study of music. I consider myself very lucky to have grown up in such a supportive town and community and feel I owe a great deal to it especially in regards to my current success in music.
Jones has ranked in national competitions on the high school and college level. After leaving Sitka he was awarded the principal position of the Oberlin Orchestra.
He has performed in master classes for trombonists, with James Miller the principal of the LA Philharmonic, Rick Stout of the Cleveland Orchestra, and Massimo La Rosa, principal of the Cleveland Orchestra.
‘‘My private instruction began in Sitka with Roger Schmidt, and has continued on to include instruction from James Desano of the Cleveland Orchestra, Timothy Higgins of the San Francisco Symphony and my current teacher Lee Allen, a successful studio musician from L.A.,’’ Jones said. ‘‘I am very excited to be back in Sitka and performing for my home town.’’

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
