African Children’s
    Choir to Perform
    The African Children’s Choir will perform in Sitka on Sunday, Sept. 14.
    A concert is set 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Grace Harbor, with a free-will offering to be collected.
    The choir will sing and dance at a concert at 6:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center. Tickets at $15 each will be available for this show beginning Sept. 1 at Old Harbor Books. The church will not be selling tickets for the show and those planning to attend are asked to stop by Old Harbor Books.   

    Former Sitka
    Author to Speak
    Author and former Sitkan Cathy Cuenin will read from her new book ‘‘The Way I Walk: From Tugboat to Transplant’’ Aug. 23 at Old Harbor Books.
    Cuenin will arrive at the store at 3 p.m., with a reading and presentation at 4 p.m.

    Local Foods
    To be Discussed
    Sitka Local Foods Network education committee will meet 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Centennial Hall.
    Those who want to learn how to grow or gather their own food, or teach others, are invited to attend. Volunteers for education projects are also being sought.
     SLFN board members and volunteers will discuss the past and future of the Family Garden Mentor Project; begin to plan the 2014-15 “It’s time to …” garden classes; and discuss new opportunities for projects such as a home business garden mentoring project and a future garden tour.
    Those interested in learning more and volunteering are encouraged to attend. For those who cannot attend the meeting or want more information, contact Michelle Putz at 747-2708.

    Harmon, Brewer
    Wedding Held
    Amber Harmon and Eric Brewer exchanged wedding vows on July 26 in front of family and friends in a ceremony at the Orca Point Lodge in Juneau.
    The bride graduated from Sitka High School in 2002, and currently works as an elementary teacher for the Juneau School District. She is the daughter of Deanna Bennett of Sitka and Fred Harmon of Colorado Springs, Colo., and the granddaughter of Georgia Rogers and the late Frank Rogers of Sitka.
    The groom graduated from Juneau Douglas High School in 2000 and works as an electrician. He is the son of Pam Brewer of Juneau and the late Ken Brewer.
    The couple will continue to make their home in Juneau.

    SAFV Board Meets
    The board of Sitkans Against Family Violence will meet 5:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at the shelter. The meeting is open to the public. For directions and more information, call 747-3370.

    Tarot Card
    Reading Set
    Richard Aufrichtig, one of the artists taking part in the Sitka Fellows Program, will present another round of tarot card readings 2-5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the BackDoor Cafe.

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
