SCDC to Meet
    Sitka Community Development Corporation will meet 7-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at the Pioneers Home Manager’s House.
    SCDC is a community supported non-profit working to establish permanently affordable housing in Sitka. Members of the public are being encouraged to attend. For more information call 747-2860.

    ‘Blackboard’ Topic
    Of UAS Course
    ‘‘Blackboard: Behind the Scenes’’ is a free course at UAS-Sitka Campus that explains the new online course to help students navigate the learning system.
    UAS uses Blackboard to deliver eLearning courses and enhance face-to-face courses. Class features include how to create a blog post, submit an assignment, use a discussion board, submit a quiz, and post to a wiki. The course also provides tips to increase student success.
    The three- to five-hour course was created by the award-winning UAS Sitka Instructional Design team.
    “All students or prospective students are welcome to participate in this course,’’ said Kathi Baldwin, a lead designer. ‘‘There is no instructor attached. However, we welcome participants to try out the discussion assignments, blog and wiki assignments, take the quizzes and examine their grade book, so that they can gain confidence in using the features that a real online course will be using.”

    Recovery Month
    Activities on Tap
    All are invited to Recovery Month activities 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. The event will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with a walk from Crescent Harbor Shelter to the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi, followed a potlatch at 6 p.m.
    The event will feature MEHS dance groups including Inupiaq, Athabaskan, Yupik, Tlingit and, for the first time, Alutiq, and a performance from Haa Toowoo Listeen, the women’s drum group.
    The event is supported by SEARHC Behavioral Health, Lakeside-Milam Recovery Centers, Hames Center and Sitka Counseling.

    Property Reviews
    Planned by City
    The City and Borough of Sitka assessor’s office is giving notice to Sitka residents that property reviews are being conducted throughout town.
    Reviews will be conducted 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
    Any property owner who has pulled a building permit or bought a home in the last year can expect a visit from the Assessing Department. Cyclical inspections will also be conducted as mandated by Sitka General Code and Alaska State Statute. The program consists of assessing personnel and verifying the condition, quality, and features of all buildings. This ensures that the information in the assessment record is consistent with the actual property and ultimately ensures equitable tax assessments, the city said.

    Concert Tickets
    Now on Sale
    Tickets have gone on sale for the Sept. 26 Sitka Folk concert featuring Regal Cheese and Strummin’ Dog with Gary Gouker.
    Tickets are at Old Harbor Books for $10. Because of space concerns, 45 tickets will be sold.

    Ranger-Guided
    Programs Slated
    Sitka National Historical Park will offer several ranger-guided activities this week.
    On Tuesday will be a 10 a.m. Battle Walk and 11 a.m. Totem Walk. Wednesday’s schedule will include a 9 a.m. Battle Walk and 11 a.m. Totem Walk.
    On Thursday, a 9 a.m. Battle Walk and 10 a.m. Totem Walk will be followed by a 1:30 p.m. Discovery Talk on sea otters.
    No programs are listed for Friday or Saturday.
    All ranger-led tours meet at the Sitka NHP visitor center on Lincoln Street.

    Power Company
    For Kids Offered
    Power Company for Kids, a program for ages 4 through fifth grade, is held Wednesdays at the Sitka Assembly of God.
    A free dinner at 5:30 p.m. is followed by a kids program of the teachings from the Bible about Jesus, 6-7:30 p.m. Games, songs and prizes are included.
