    Fashion Show
    Set Saturday
The public is invited to a fashion show 3-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Sheldon Jackson Museum gallery. Students who recently took part in artist-in-residence Karen Denise McIntyre’s sewing class will show the kuspuks they sewed.
McIntire is an Irish-Eskimo, born in Nevada, raised in Alaska. She spent many of her years growing up in South-Central Alaska and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Region. In October of 1986, McIntire relocated to Bethel. In 2013 she moved to Sitka and is now the owner of a small business, Creative Native, making and selling hand-crafted gifts.

    Costumes Are
    Encouraged for
    Alaska Day Events
The onset of fall weather reminds Sitkans that Alaska Day is fast-approaching and it’s time to get out their costumes reminiscent of the 1860s.
Those preparing for the week leading up to Oct. 18 can find period costuming design help at Kettleson Library/Stratton Library for both American and Russian civilian and military styles.
Fabric shops offer sketches, patterns, trims, and names of possible seamstresses, as well as materials for constructing day or evening attire for women, men and children. Basic garments for alteration may be found at thrift shops and yard sales.
If local sources are not sufficient, an Internet search for Civil War era uniforms or clothing can be rewarding.

    Alaska Day Recruits
    9th Infantry Men
Steve Dalquist is enlisting men for Sitka Ninth Infantry to simulate the newly arrived American forces of 1867 who marched through the streets of New Archangel and up the hill to the governor’s residence for the historical Oct. 18, 1867, transfer of Alaska from Russian claim to the United States at Sitka.
Dalquist invites anyone interested in post-Civil War 1860s American military uniforms and black powder weapons to call him at 752-0750 or 747-4835. Youths who could carry a drum or guidon (flag) are also welcome.
Members of Sitka Ninth Infantry will march in the Alaska Day afternoon parade on Oct. 18 and will assist in raising the American Flag and firing salutes during the transfer re-enactment at Castle Hill. They may also appear in costume as greeters at various events and at the airport.
Assistance with costumes and weapons is available from Dalquist and others who participated for the unit’s appearance in the July 4th parade.

    SEARHC Clinic
    Has New Hours
The Women, Infants and Children clinic at the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium’s Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital has changed its hours. The office will now be open 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
WIC was created in 1972 as an amendment to the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 for the purpose of providing nutrition assistance to its recipients.
For more than 40 years, many low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women have been able to take care of themselves, their infants, and young children by signing up for the WIC program.
SEARHC is one of the organizations that administers the program, helping many women apply and assist with any questions, concerns or issues that arise.
SEARHC encourages those who wish to check to see if they are eligible to contact Susan Suarez, WIC nutrition educator, at 966-8352 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
SEARHC WIC is an equal opportunity provider.

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
