Sewing Class
Set for Adults
A class for basic sewing techniques for adults is planned 7-9 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 16-Dec. 18, at Blatchley Middle School.
Machines will be provided; however, those who have a sewing machine may take it. Some of the techniques to be taught including hemming pants, basic alterations and basic quilting.
Registration is open at the Community Schools office at Blatchley Middle School. Space is limited. Call 747-8670 with questions.
Senior Hiking
Plans Event
Seniors 60 years and older, of all ability and experience levels, are invited to hike with Southeast Alaska Independent Living 9:15-11:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16.
All experience levels are welcome, and hikers are being encouraged to go at their own pace. Participants should meet at the Swan Lake Senior Center at 9:15 a.m. Transportation to the trail head will be provided, as well as snacks, and SAIL will return to the Senior Center by 11:30 a.m.

Hall to Read
Alaskan author and journalist Andy Hall will be reading from his latest book, “Denali’s Howl,” 5-7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Old Harbor Books.

Adds to Alaska
Day Festival
Alaska Airlines is being recognized by organizers of Sitka’s annual Alaska Day Festival for its role in successfully transporting visitors to take part in this commemoration of the historic 1867 Transfer event at Sitka.
Local appreciation is also expressed for Alaska Airlines’ donation of two vouchers for travel anywhere the carrier flies. The vouchers will be presented as a door prize at the Ball on Friday night Oct. 17 at Centennial Hall. Ball ticket holders must be present to win door prizes.
“As a good corporate citizen, it is our ongoing aim at Alaska Airlines to make a meaningful contribution in the communities that we serve and we hope that this support will be helpful,” said Tim R. Thompson, manager of public affairs for Alaska
Each ticket is valued at $1,250. The transportation is completely unrestricted, good on Alaska Airlines and/or Horizon Air, and does not have any blackout dates applied.
Babies & Books
Open House Set
Babies and Books will host a trick-or-read open house program 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 25 at Kettleson Memorial Library.
Children are invited to wear their Halloween costumes, participate in a scavenger hunt with prizes, free board books and crafts included. The program is for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Registration is not required. The public is invited. For more information call the library at 747-8708.
Spanish Taught
Registration for Spanish level 1 and 2 for children ages 7 and older opens at Kettleson Oct. 15.
The free classes, starting on Nov. 5, will be Wednesdays. Level 2 will start at 4:15 p.m. Level 1 will start at 4:50 p.m. This is not a drop-in program and registration is required and limited. For more information call 747-8708.
Painting Party
At Boathouse
The Maritime Heritage Society will have a painting party 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.
Volunteers are needed to help paint the inside of the Japonski Island boathouse. A buffet of drinks and snacks will be provided.
“All the prep work is done, it’s just pure painting,” said Executive Director Carole Gibb. “It will feel good to get a coat of paint on, and see the difference it makes.”

New Archangel
Dancers Perform
The New Archangel Dancers’ annual Alaska Day performance is planned 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Centennial Hall.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children, and will be available for purchase at Centennial Hall noon-6 p.m. daily Oct. 4-13, or the night of the performance.
All proceeds from the performance benefit the Alaska Day Festival. The performance features a variety of traditional folk dances from Russia and the surrounding regions, and live music from the SitNiks. Call 747-5516 or check online at www.newarchangeldancers.com for information.

To Meet Tuesday
Alaska Day Festival coordinators will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for a final planning review for the 2014 mid-October commemoration of the 1867 purchase transfer of Russian claim in Alaska to the United States at Sitka.
Participants should note the change of meeting location to fellowship hall of Sitka Lutheran Church, 224 Lincoln St.
Celebrating 65 years of the Alaska Day Festivals is the theme this year.

Calligraphy Class
Slated at UAS
UAS-Sitka Campus will hold an introduction to calligraphy workshop on Mondays 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 13-Nov. 10. Useful for a variety of personal and business projects, Norman Campbell will be teaching design and execution of lettering with broad tip instruments and brushes. Cost is $50. Horse Rides Set
On Alaska Day
Horse rides will be offered the afternoon of Oct. 17 and on Oct. 18 following the Alaska Day parade, at the Mt. Edgecumbe ball field.
A showmanship exhibition is slated 11 a.m. Oct. 18.

On Alaska Day
Brave Heart Volunteers invites the public to its annual open house and chowder sale 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18.
‘‘Stop by after the parade and warm up with delicious chowder, Dennis’ famous Curry, and treats,’’ BHV said in a press release. ‘‘There will be plenty of food, great company, and a chance to nominate your local inspiration as this year’s Mighty Sitkan.’’
