Bring Your Boo to the Library
Fresh From Kettleson
The Litwit
by Greg Mandel
Greetings, Kettleheads! It is I, The Litwit, bringing you the latest from Kettleson Memorial Library.
This week it’s all about Halloween at the …. Li-scary (cue the evil, ghoulish laughter sound effect).
The fun starts on Friday, Halloween night, with a costume parade. All the little boos and ghouls will gather outside Centennial Hall (mummies and daddies, too!) at 6:15 p.m., then parade to the library at 831 Lincoln Street (our temporary Stratton location). And then the real fun begins. From 6:30 to 8:30, we’ll have spooky stories, giveaways, and a scary (but not-too-scary), age-appropriate movie for kids. Everyone is invited. And don’t forget: bring your boo!
Then, after you and your little ones have been treated for your Halloween stomach aches and recovered from your Candy Corn hangovers, you can turn your attention to some more serious educational and fun activities. Like learning Spanish. There’s still time to enroll your child in our Spanish for Children classes. The classes – for kids ages 6 and up – will be held every Wednesday, starting Nov. 5. Space is limited, so register your youngster today.
And you can also sign up for a new program, sponsored by Sitka Babies and Books: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. Register your child at the library and receive a reading log. Write down the title of every book you read to your child. After completing 50 books, you’ll collect your child’s first prize. After 100 books, your little one will receive a free bag. And when you reach 1,000 books, your child gets a free book, plus he or she will be inducted into our Reading Hall of Fame! Eat your heart out, Pete Rose!
Heritage Parade,
Candidate Forum
Sitka Tribe of Alaska invites the community to help celebrate the beginning of Native Heritage Awareness Month by marching or riding in the NHAM parade, or cheering the participants on.
Parade lineup on Sunday, Nov. 2, will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Crescent Harbor parking lot. The parade begins at 2 p.m., processing on Lincoln Street to the Sheet’ka Kwáan Naa Kahídi, where, following the parade, STA will host refreshments for all, and at 2:45 a Meet the Candidates forum for Tribal elections.
The forum will begin with introduction of candidates and the platform statements, and end with questions for the candidates from the audience and the moderator.
The election for four council members and a chairman will be Nov. 11.
For information regarding the parade or candidate forum, contact Sitka Tribe of Alaska offices at 747-3207.
