Dignitaries who will be marching include Mayor Mim McConnell and State House Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins.

“Everyone is invited to come out to honor our local veterans,” said George Bennett, the rural veterans liaison at SEARHC-Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital and organizer of the Sitka Veterans Association.

A community dinner will follow at 5:30 p.m. at the ANB Founders Hall. Everyone is invited to attend.  Another dinner has been scheduled at the Sitka Elks Lodge at 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m., sponsored by the Sitka Emblem Club. It is open to all; however, is free to all veterans, active-duty military and spouses.

Tonight at the 6 p.m. Assembly meeting at Centennial Hall, the mayor will present the following proclamation:

‘‘Whereas, America is the land of freedom, preserved and protected willingly and freely by citizen soldiers; and

‘‘Whereas, millions who have answered the call to arms have died on the field of battle; and

‘‘Whereas, a nation at peace must be reminded of the price of war and the debt owed to those who have served and died in war; and

‘‘Whereas, the sacrifices and contributions of those who serve in the U.S. military are deserving of commemoration, honor, and recognition.

‘‘Now, therefore, be it resolved, that the Assembly of the City and Borough of Sitka, Alaska, does hereby call upon the citizens of Sitka to observe the 11th day of November, 2014, as Veterans Day and commend, honor and recognize the valor and sacrifices of Americans’ veterans for defending and protecting our country, our freedom and our way of life.

‘‘Signed and sealed on this 10th day of November 2014.’’

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
