ANB to Meet

Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 will meet 7 p.m. Dec. 8 at the ANB Founders Hall.

Winter Music

Concerts on Tap

Sitka High School invites the public to two winter music concerts at the Performing Arts Center.

The choir concert is 7 p.m. Dec. 8 and the band concert is 7 p.m. Dec. 10.

 

Youth Advocates

Board to Meet

Youth Advocates of Sitka’s board of directors will meet 5:15-7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at YAS’s 805 Lincoln street office. The meeting is open to the public.

 

T’ai Chi Chih

Practice Listed

T’ai Chi Chih Practice by the Sea will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Knitting with Class shop located  next to the Kettleson Memorial Library construction site.

All are invited to participate. This is not a class.

 

 

 

ALFA to Meet

Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association will hold a member meeting 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in the downstairs classroom at the Sitka Sound Science Center.

Agenda items include: updates on the halibut and sablefish catch limit recommendations; and discussion of BOF and NPFMC proposals.

The meeting is open to the public. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

 

Beginning Spin

Class at Hames

A beginner spin class is starting at the Hames Center 8 a.m. Dec. 6.

Participants will learn the basics of spinning class including bike setup, technique and proper form.  Spinning builds strength and cardio.

‘Frozen’ Party

Set for Saturday

Girl Scout Troop 4140 is holding a ‘‘Frozen’’ party fundraiser 5-10 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Keet Gooshi Heen multipurpose room.

On-Air Meeting Set

Raven Radio’s on-air annual meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8.

Station staff and board members will report on Raven Radio’s news, programming, financial health and future plans. Raven Radio is a listener- supported non-profit community radio station broadcasting in Sitka at 104.7 and 90.1FM offering news and live streaming at kcaw.org. 

 

Muscles, Manicures

Saturday at Hames

A free ladies night, ‘‘Muscles and Manicures,’’ is being offered 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Hames Center.

Women can work out, learn strength training basics from Hames Center’s personal trainer Mariah Comer, have a mini massage, and have a chance to win a free manicure at Botanika Spa.

Sign ups are now being taken for a strength training class with Linda Speerstra or a demo class on how to use the equipment upstairs from Mariah Comer or Jessica Pyatt from Sitka Physical Therapy.

Get Flu Shots

National Influenza Vaccination Week is Dec. 7-13 and the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium  would like to remind people of the importance of getting a flu shot.

Flu season typically peaks between December and February but significant activity can occur as late as May.

‘‘As long as flu viruses are spreading, it’s never too late to get a vaccine to protect yourself and your loved ones,’’ SEARHC said.

Flu vaccines are offered in many locations such as, SEARHC clinics, doctor’s offices, health departments, pharmacies and college health centers. Most health insurance plans cover the cost of recommended vaccines, so individuals should check with their insurance provider for details of coverage.

 

SHS DDF Holds

Dessert Auction

The Sitka High School drama, debate and forensics team will hold its annual Dessert Auction and Showcase 6 p.m. Sunday in the SHS Commons.

The evening combines “delectable desserts” with some of the season’s best performances by the DDF team, said coach Stefanie Ask. Admission is free.

 

Better Breakers

Club Meets Dec. 12

The Better Breathers Club will meet at Swan Lake Senior Center 1-2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12. Physical therapist Bridget Hitchcock will give a presentation on the importance of strengthing and stretching of muscles to improve breathing.

The Better Breathers Club is a support group for patients with chronic lung disease, including COPD, asthma, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer and other chronic lung diseases.

The meeting is also open to caregivers, family, friends and support persons. Call Rose Manning 747-5167 for more information.
