SHS Soccer
Players to Meet
Sitka High School soccer players and their parents will hold an informational meeting 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, in the SHS library. All are asked to attend to prepare for the 2015 season.
Artist Campbell
To Teach Class
Sitka artist Norman Campbell will teach an intermediate drawing class at UAS-Sitka Campus beginning 7-9 p.m. tonight. Originally the class had been scheduled to begin Feb. 17.
Nine two-hour classes will be held through April 28. Students will develop their personal drawing skills with guided drawing from Campbell.
For those who have completed a basic or beginning drawing class, the class will help expand powers of perception, develop ideas of subject matter, and gain confidence and skill in their ability to produce finished artwork.
Specialized art supplies will be provided. The non-credit class costs $80 including a $10 materials fee. Register online at ace web.uas.alaska.edu or by calling 747-7700.
Doc Talk Canceled
The Feb. 25 Doc Talk has been canceled due to Banff Mountain Film Festival and re-scheduled. Dr. David Vastola will speak on immunizations at the April 8 Doc Talk event. For more information go to www.hamescenter.org.
Family Fun Day
March 1 at Hames
Family Fun Day will be held 3-5 p.m. March 1 at the Hames Center.
On the first Sunday of each month, Sitkans are invited to the Hames Center. The event includes toys, games, bouncy castle, bouncy house and climbing wall.
A youth pass is free with the purchase of an adult one for $8. Members are admitted free of charge.

Formline Design
Class to Begin
Mark Sixbey, adjunct professor at UAS-Sitka Campus, will teach an introduction to formline design class beginning today.
The class will run 6-9 p.m. tonight and Thursday, and 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28.
‘‘Beginning Northwest Coast Design’’ is a one-credit class that will lead students in a study of the basic elements of traditional Northwest Coast Design. Students will be guided in the use of ovoids, u–shapes, and formlines to develop traditional as well as contemporary designs. They will also learn methods for transferring designs to other media, such as wood or cloth.
Students may participate in a coordinated art project for display at the UAS campus.
Chamber to Meet
Sitka School Board President Lon Garrison will address Chamber of Commerce members at a luncheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.
Garrison will talk about the Sitka School District budget and education funding.
‘Annie’ Staged
This Weekend
All are invited to join the Sitka Fine Arts Camp’s Young Performers’ Theater for a production of ‘‘Annie.’’
Based on a comic strip, the classic story tells the tale of a plucky orphan defying the odds in the 1940s – full of well-known tunes like “Tomorrow,” “It’s the Hard Knock Life” and “Easy Street.”
Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Feb. 28, and 2 p.m. on March 1 at the Odess Theater in Allen Hall. Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 students and seniors, and are available now at Old Harbor Books or by calling 747-3085.
Signups Friday
For Film Festival
The Sitka Film Society will hold signups for the 48-Hour Film Festival 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at 713B Sawmill Creek Road.
In the film festival, filmmakers are challenged to make a short film in 48 hours. Rules are given out at the signup time, and the completed films need to be turned in by Sunday evening. There is no cost for signing up.
The films will be shown 5:30 p.m. March 11 at the Downtown Coliseum. Those needing more information may call Van at 738-1074.
Youth Orchestra
Concert March 2
Sitka Youth Orchestra will hold its 14th annual spring concert 7 p.m. March 2 at the Performing Arts Center.
It will feature symphonic works by Handel, Mozart, Telemann, Ravel, Brahms, Holst and special selections performed by some of the graduating seniors in the orchestra.
The group is under the direction of Barbara Rocheleau and Jan Lovett, and has been rehearsing since January to prepared for the performance. Donations will be accepted at the door for the hour-long, family-friendly concert. For more information call 747-3653.
Parents, Teachers
Meet at Blatchley
Parent-teacher conferences will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 24-25, at Blatchley Middle School.
Parents are invited to check in with teachers and receive students’ progress reports and updated grades.
Conferences are held by appointment only on Thursday, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. To set one up, call 747-8672.
