Pioneers to Meet

A regular meeting of Igloos 22 and 12 of the Pioneers of Alaska will be held Thursday, March 5, at Sitka Methodist Church on Kimsham St. 

Social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6, followed by a short program describing various benefits available to seniors. A short business meeting will round out the evening. Pioneers and friends are welcome to attend.

 

Lantern Festival

Party March 6

A potluck dinner party in observance of the Lantern Festival will be 6 p.m. Friday, March 6, at the Unitarian Hall, 408 Marine Street.

All are invited to take a dish to share.

Those wanting to help make yuanxiao and dumplings are invited at 4:30 p.m. 

Followign the 6 p.m. dinner, the group will play guessing lantern riddles. Games, music for disco or ballroom dancing, or movies can be taken to the event.

48-Hour Film

Festival March 11

The Sitka Film Society will host the 48-Hour Film Festival 5:30 p.m. Wedmesday, March 11, at the Downtown Colliseum.

In the film festival, filmmakers are challenged to make a short film in 48 hours. Those needing more information may call Van at 738-1074.

 

Blue Lake Road

Open to Foot Traffic

Blue Lake Road is now open for foot traffic only. Vehicles may park in the parking lots on Sawmill Creek Road. For more information call the Electric Department at 747-4000.

 

Rep. JKT in Sitka

State Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins is making a mid-session visit to Sitka and will hold public office hours 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at the Backdoor Cafe and 2:30-3:30 p.m. March 4 at Highliner Coffee.

The Sitka High senior party planning meeting will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at Centennial Hall. 

 

Chamber to Meet

State Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins will address the Sitka Chamber of Commerce weekly luncheon noon Wednesday at the Westmark Sitka.

Kreiss-Tomkins will discuss current happenings at the state Legislature.

A bake sale will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Wells Fargo Bank to benefit Sitka High School seniors.

Group to Meet

The Women’s Book Group will meet to discuss ‘‘The Girls of Atomic City’’ by Denise Kiernan 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at the Pioneers Home Chapel.

All women are invited to participate.

Funding Requests

The Sitka Woman’s Club is accepting donation requests from non-profit organizations that must be postmarked by March 31.

The Sitka Woman’s Club is accepting donation requests from non-profit organizations through the end of March.

Organizations may request funds for small projects that will benefit the community, especially women and children. The club has a limited 2015 donation budget, so requests should not exceed $500, the club said. Awards will be announced and disbursed in mid-April. 

The club can only accept requests that include the required application, “Annual Request for Donations to Non-Profit Organizations,” which can be obtained by calling Karen at 747-7803 or Mary at 738-0969, who can send it electronically, and also provide further information.

Applications must be delivered or postmarked by March 31, and must be mailed to: Sitka Woman’s Club, 300 Harbor Drive, Sitka, AK 99835, Attn: Donations Committee.

The Sitka Woman’s Club is dedicated to serving the community of Sitka by being an organized center of thought and action that champions humanitarian causes, fosters closer personal acquaintance, and provides mutual assistance through social venues that promote the general well-being and prosperity of all with a focus on women and children. 

Applicants should explain the need for the requested donation, and address how their proposal will help to fulfill the Sitka Woman’s Club’s mission. 

 

Northrim Bank

Welcomes New

Branch Manager

Bradley Leathers has been named branch manager for Northrim’s Sitka branch, Northrim Bank President and CEO Joe Beedle has announced.

Leathers began his banking career in 2007 with Wells Fargo in Ketchikan where he served as assistant to the district president providing administrative support to 11 retail branches.

Most recently, he was the branch manager for Wells Fargo in Skagway.  He has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Vanderbilt University. Leathers has worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ketchikan, Skagway Chamber of Commerce, Alaska 4 A’s Southeast Advisory Board and the Skagway Dahl Memorial Clinic.

Sitka School Board members will meet 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in the Sitka High School Library.

For Easter Service

Practice for the Easter sunrise service at Centennial Hall will be 1 p.m. Sundays at the United Methodist Church, 303 Kimsham.

Dementia Care

Workshop Topic

Brave Heart Volunteers and Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska will offer a workshop for those who have a working knowledge of dementia and are in roles that support individuals, families and/or direct care workers 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at Centennial Hall.

The purpose of the workshop is to build a foundation of knowledge and practical skills which will enable the learner to integrate best practices in person-centered care that positively impact the quality of life for people with dementia.

Registration cost is $50 and space is limited. Participants will be eligible for seven continuing nursing education hours.

Subsistence

Panel to Meet

The Southeast Alaska Subsistence Regional Advisory Council will meet March 17-19 at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi.

The meeting begins at 11 a.m. on March 17; and 9 a.m. on March 18-19.

The council will develop proposals to change federal subsistence hunting and trapping regulations and discuss other issues related to subsistence in the Southeast Region. Following the meeting, 7-9 p.m. on March 17, the public may  to submit comments on the proposal to revise the rural determination process.

A public meeting on rural determination is scheduled 11 a.m.-2 p.m. March 16 at the Saxman Community Center in Saxman.

Art Show Set

The Sitka Health Summit and Greater Sitka Arts Council will hold a collaborative art exhibit and fundraising silent auction, “The Art of Health,” March 13-20 at Homeport Eatery.

An opening party will be held 5-8 p.m. on March 13. 

More than 20 pieces of local art celebrating health and wellness will be on display and available for bid. All proceeds benefit the organizations and the artists.
