Rummage Sale

At Pioneers Home

The annual Sitka Pioneers Home rummage sale and fundraiser will be held 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, April 17, and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 18, in the recreation kitchen in the basement of the home, on the Lincoln Street side.

On sale will be a variety of items including desks, file cabinets, book cases, recliners, dining chairs, clothing and pet supplies. Items will be sold on a first-come, first-served, basis.

Readings on Tap

Local musicians and writers will join the Island Institute’s April writers-in-residence Ruby Hansen Murray and Alice Rose Crow (Maar’aq), for readings and performances centering around the theme of place and belonging 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at the Yaw Chapel on the SJ Campus. 

They will present their own work alongside the work of their local collaborators. The public is invited to attend.

Murray and Crow are in town through the Island Institute’s Collaborative Residency. 

Health Center

Sets Open House

The Sitka Public Health Center will host an open house in conjunction with the Office of Children’s Services and the Office of Public Assistance noon-3 p.m. Monday, April 20, at 210 Moller Drive.

All are invited to stop by to meet the staff and find out what services are provided. A light lunch will be provided by the Public Health Center.

Comedy Troupe

Performs in Sitka 

Chicago’s The Second City, America’s premier comedy troupe, is kicking off its Alaska tour in Sitka 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at the Performing Arts Center.

The public is invited to see the comedy stars of tomorrow performing the sketches and improv routines from their storied history.

Alumni include Bill Murray, Steve Carell and Tina Fey.

The show will feature mature and adult content. Tickets are available at Old Harbor Books at $25 general admission, and $20 for students and seniors. Call the Sitka Fine Arts Camp at 747-3085 for more information. 

Film Series

To Highlight 

2 Whale Species

The Arctic Ocean is home to numerous species of whales that rely on its nutrient rich waters for sustenance. During the April film series at Sitka National Historical Park, bowhead and killer whales will be the focus of two documentary films that illuminate the Arctic’s complex web of life and how it is changing.

The series will run 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18 in the park visitor center. 

‘‘Arctic Currents: A Year in the Life of a Bowhead Whale’’ is a 25-minute animated film that dives into the lives of these Arctic giants by exploring their role in the Arctic’s ecosystem and the cultural significance of these whales for the Inupiaq people.

‘‘Invasion of the Killer Whales’’ is a 50-minute PBS film that documents the increasing number of killer whales in the arctic and how their presence is impacting their environment. 

Free popcorn will be provided during both screenings. Attendees also will be eligible to win door prizes provided by park partners. 

The monthly film series, held from December-April at Sitka National Historical Park’s visitor center, is jointly presented by Sitka National Historical Park, Sitka Conservation Society and the Sitka Sound Science Center. 

Unitarians Meet

At Sunday’s Unitarian Fellowship meeting Sherie Mayo will present a program on “The Power of the Female Principle through Mantra.”

Fellowship begins at 10:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:45 a.m. Soup and bread follows the program at noon. The Fellowship Hall is located at 408 Marine Street, with parking behind off Spruce Street.

Registration Open

For Preschool

Registration is open at Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool for the 2015-16 school year. The preschool offers morning and afternoon preschool classes.
