Salmon Derby
Prizes Announced
To add excitement to its 60th annual Salmon Derby, Sitka Sportsman’s Association has announced a special payment of $25,000 for the first derby king entered weighing between 50 and 50.99 pounds. Payments of $20,000 for the first king weighing between 44 and 44.99 pounds, and $15,000 for first king weighing between 21 and 21.99 pounds are also planned. Fish must be entered at the Crescent Harbor Barge for certified weighing to qualify.

Salmon Derby dates are May 23-24-25 (Memorial Day) and May 30-31.
Free Admission
At Science Center
The Sitka Sound Science Center will have free admission on Thursday, April 23, in observance of Earth Week. Thursday will also be the grand opening of the center’s new living stream exhibit, designed and built by local middle school students.
Stop by the center 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. to check out the miniature version of a healthy salmon stream.
Music Concerts
For Grade School
The first-grade music concert is scheduled 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21
6:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center.
The kindergarten music concert will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, also at the Performing Arts Center

Whale expert Jan Straley and biologists from Sitka Tribe of Alaska and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game will be featured on a cruise sponsored by Sitka Whalefest this weekend.

Police Blotter: Preston Williams reported $6 worth of gas was stolen from his vehicle while it was parked at the Kiksadi. Paul Garwood said two tires on the KSA-TV van were slashed while the truck was parked at the Hobby House. George Reid, Arrowhead Trailer Court said guns, steamer trunks and decanters valued at $1,500 were stolen by burglars. A telephone was reported detached from the booth next to the post office.
