Rummage Sale 

Benefit Saturday

A rummage sale benefit will be 8:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 25, in the Blatchley Middle School multipurpose room.

The event is a fundraiser for Angie and Haley Bartolaba’s trip to Haiti with The Haiti Project June 1-10. More information is at www.thehaitiproject.com.

Celebration of Life

For Phil Jackson Sr.

A celebration of life for Phil Jackson Sr. will be held 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Sitka Moose Lodge.

‘‘This event will be a potluck, so bring a snack, stories and photos to share as together we celebrate the life of this special man,’’ Sitka friends said. ‘‘Phil is forever in our hearts.’’

Sitka Hospital Names New

Nursing Home Administrator

Sitka Community Hospital announces that Kay Turner, PT, DPT, director of outpatient services and rehabilitation department manager, has passed the rigorous nursing home administrator exam.

Sitka Community Hospital is licensed for 15 long-term care beds and provides: 24-hour nursing care by RNs, LPNs and CNAs; private and semi-private rooms; full-time manager; on-site administration; excellent staff to resident ratio; on-site family practice clinic, emergency room, laboratory, and radiology services; full-time rehabilitation department, physical therapy, occupation therapy and speech therapy; registered dietician; individualized activities program; cable and internet services; and social services.

Turner graduated with a doctorate in physical therapy from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., in 2002, awarded cum laude, as well as a certificate in health services administration. In 1999, she received an honors bachelor of science degree from Oregon State University in Corvallis, summa cum laude. 

Turner grew up in Sitka, graduated co-valedictorian in her class at Sitka High School in 1995 and returned with her family in 2006. Turner volunteered in the rehabilitation department as a high school student, and has worked at Sitka Community Hospital as a physical therapist since 2006. Her professional career started in Maryland where she worked in a large sports medicine practice alongside several orthopedic surgeons. She has always been involved in athletics, especially cross country and track, and was on the varsity crew team at Oregon State University. 

Besides participating in the events Sitka has to offer, she enjoys hiking, fishing, beach-combing, hunting and spending time with her family. She is also a member of the Sitka Parks and Recreation Committee.

We have an outstanding group of employees who are dedicated to providing the best possible care and living environment for our residents. I love the close- knit community of Sitka and want to provide the best services possible through our community hospital.”

Dinner Cruise to Raise Funds

For Cape Decision Lighthouse

The Cape Decision Lighthouse Society benefit dinner cruise aboard the M/V Mist Cove, patterned after an ex-U.S. Navy minesweeper converted to a luxury passenger vessel, is scheduled 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 15.

The M/V Mist Cove will be laying at the North Petro Marine dock and ready to receive up to 22 dinner guests, who may begin boarding at 5:30 p.m., with departure as soon as everyone is accounted for, and a safety briefing has been given. A self-serve bar will be open and appetizers will be served once under way in the salon.

The society will show a brief presentation of the lighthouse site, projects and work that have been accomplished over the years, and memberships and merchandise will be available.

A full-course dinner will be served at 7 p.m. on the after-deck, and the boat will be back at the dock at approximately 9:30 p.m. for disembarkation. 

The benefit dinner cruise was donated by The Boat Company, an educational nonprofit and public charity established in 1979 by the McIntosh Foundation, which has provided nature-based cruises in Southeast Alaska for 35 years. The company’s two overnight cruise vessels are dedicated to encouraging greater public appreciation for the unique ecology of Southeast Alaska.

The Boat Company believes that positive visitor experiences can help build a strong constituency for the protection and wise management of the region’s fish, wildlife and wilderness resources.

Tickets are $100 per person, are limited, and will be available at Old Harbor Books on May 1. All proceeds benefit the Cape Decision Lighthouse Society historic preservation work on southern Kuiu Island. Those attending are asked to be onboard by 5:30 p.m., and should provide contact information with Old Harbor Books when picking up a ticket for communication purposes. STA Health Panel

To Meet May 1

The STA Health Committee is scheduled to meet noon-1 p.m. Friday, May 1, at the STA social services building at 110 American Street.

Lunch will be provided. Community members who are interested in joining the committee may call 747-7293.

Community Hospital

Interim CFO to Speak

Cynthia Brandt, Sitka Community Hospital’s interim CFO, will speak and answer questions following a short business meeting of the SCH Auxiliary  noon May 12 in the SCH classroom.

Lunch will be available from the Basement Bistro, which is free to auxiliary members. The meeting is open to the public. 

Membership to the auxiliary is open to all, and yearly dues are $10. The group holds four business meetings a year.

Celebration of Life

For James Drury

Sitka Lutheran Church will celebrate and remember the life of its former pastor, The Rev. Jim Drury, 2 p.m.  Saturday, May 2.

The community is invited to join in this special time of prayers, telling stories, singing and music.

Among his many talents, he is remembered for his guitar playing ability, wonderful singing voice and beautiful poetry. Drury served Sitka Lutheran and the community in general from 1992 to 2008. He passed away on April 7, 2015, in Price, Utah, from complications of heart surgery.

Spring Cleaning

Sale at White E

The White Elephant Shop will have a storewide spring cleaning half-price sale in the main store and children’s shop noon-3 p.m. Saturday, April 25.

Sale items will include the front window of wedding items, cleats and gloves; and all other store merchandise  except boutique and bags of rags.

Unitarians to Meet

At Sunday’s Unitarian Fellowship meeting the group will discuss the writings of Thich Nhat Hahn, a spiritual resource.

Fellowship begins at 10:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:45 a.m. A children’s program is provided.  Soup and bread follows the program at noon.

The Fellowship Hall is located at 408 Marine Street, with parking behind off Spruce Street.

Marine Mammal

Panel to Meet

The Sitka Marine Mammal Commission will meet 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s Resource Protection Department office  at 429 Katlian Street.

The public is invited to attend.
