Lil Dragons
Karate on Tap
Lil Dragons Karate, for 4- and 5-year-olds, will run 9:50-10:20 a.m. Saturdays June 20-Aug. 8 at Baranof Elementary School.

Karate Offered
Ken Wa Kai Karate of Sitka is available for ages 6 and older.
Classes run Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays June 15-July 14. Participants can choose one, two or all three class times: 5:45-6:30 p.m. Mondays, 7-7:45 p.m. Wednesdays and 9-9:45 a.m. Saturdays.
The adult class meets 6:30-7:15 p.m. Tuesdays.

Gavan Hill Hike
Set for June 20
Sitka Trail Works will offer a free, guided, 6-mile hike up Gavan Hill to Harbor Mountain 9 a.m. Saturday, June 20.
Hikers will meet at the trailhead parking area in the Sitka High parking lot. For more information, call 747-7244.
Scripture Walks
Planned in Park
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church invites the community to join “Scripture Walks in the Park” on Monday evenings.
Participants will meet at Totem Park/Totem Loop Trail on Lincoln Street side at 5:30 p.m. beginning June 29, and continuing on Mondays through Aug. 24.

Sabbath Poetry
Retreat June 27
St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church invites the community to a Sabbath Poetry Retreat 10 a.m.-1 p.m. June 27 at the church, 611 Lincoln Street.
Participants will reflect on scriptures and sabbath poetry from the book “This Day: Collected and New Sabbath Poems” by Wendell Berry. Mt. Edgecumbe
Hike on June 27
Sitka Trail Works and Allen Marine will offer a hike up Mt. Edgecumbe Saturday, June 27.
The boat will leave Crescent Harbor at 8:30 a.m. and return at 7:15 p.m.The trail is 7 miles up the volcano to the top.
‘‘This is a difficult hike, but well worth the effort,’’ Sitka Trail Works said. ‘‘There are beautiful views of the ocean below.’’
Participants should dress for the weather and pack a lunch. Call the Sitka Trail Works office at 747-7244 to purchase a $100 hike ticket.
Maritime-Themed
Parade Set Aug. 8
The Sitka Seafood Festival’s maritime-themed parade will be noon Saturday, Aug. 8.
Businesses, organizations and individuals are invited to participate.
‘‘You could ride a float using a truck, a boat, a 4-wheeler, a wagon, a tote. You could walk wearing any maritime-related costumes: sea creatures, mermaids, pirates or fisher-persons. You could dress individually or as a group – think snaking down Lincoln as an eel or a really big fish or the Loch Ness monster,’’ Sitka Seafood Festival said. ‘‘You, or a representative, could carry a business or organization banner.’’
Participants should line up at 11:30 a.m. at Crescent Harbor parking lot. The parade will begin as soon as the tote race ends. It will follow Lincoln Street to Sheldon Jackson Campus.

Open Skate Set
Sitka Community Schools will offer open skate starting June 23 to run 3-5 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday at Blatchley Middle School.
The cost is $2 for students and seniors and $4 for adults. The skate rental is $2, with limited sizes.
Those 10 years of age and younger must be accompanied by a responsible adult, 16 or older. Helmets and pads are not supplied but recommended, SCS said.
Farewell Set for
Pastor Llenado
A farewell picnic potluck for Pastor Ferdinand Llenado from the Sitka United Methodist Church will be 11 a.m. Sunday, June 14. It will be followed by a special program.
Llenado is moving to the Seattle area. The community is invited to participate. For more information contact Sitka United Methodist Church at 747-8775.
Bach’s Lunch Set
The Sitka Summer Music Festival will present a free lunchtime concert 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, in the Odess Theater.
The Matt Herskowitz Trio with cellist Zuill Bailey will perform a mixture of Bach, Brubeck, Gershwin and others. More information may be found at sitkamusicfestival.org
Musical Movie
Night June 11
The Sitka Summer Music Festival will present its musical movie series on Thursdays in June.
On June 11, at 7:30 a.m., “August Rush,” the story about an orphaned musical prodigy starring Robin Williams, will be shown at UAS-Sitka Campus, Room 229. Admission is free; donations are appreciated.
Evening Concert
Slated for Friday
The Sitka Summer Music Festival will present the Matt Herskowitz Trio performing their own interpretations of Chopin’s ‘‘Etudes’’ 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Centennial Hall.
Pianist Natasha Paremski will perform “Pictures at an Exhibition” as the second half of the program. There will be a pre-concert conversation at 6:45. Tickets are available at Old Harbor Books, online at sitkamusicfestival.org, or at the door.
SSMF Concert

Cellist Zuill Bailey will perform Claude Bolling’s ‘‘Jazz Suite for Cello’’ with the Matt Herskowitz Trio as part of the Sitka Summer Music Festival 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Centennial Hall.
Pianist Natasha Paremski will also join Bailey onstage with the Rachmaninoff Cello Sonata, and the Herskowitz Trio will play their version of a Chopin Sonata.

Annual Crab Feed
Sunday for SSMF
The Sitka Summer Music Festival will host the Silver Bay Seafoods Crab Feed Picnic 3 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at the Crescent Harbor shelter.
Tanner crab plus salads and desserts will be served. Tickets are available at Old Harbor Books, online at sitkamusicfestival.org, or at the shelter until they’re sold out.

Duct-Tape Wallet
Children in second to sixth grades are invited to a ‘‘Make Your Own Super Hero Duct-Tape Wallet’’ program 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, at Kettleson Memorial Library.
The program is free and materials will be provided; however, registration is required. Children of all abilities are welcome.
The workshop is part of ‘‘Every Hero Has a Story,’’ the 2015 Summer Reading Program at the library that runs May 30 to Aug. 8.

Superhero Puppets
Children 6 years and older are invited to create their own super hero puppet 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 20, at Kettleson Memorial Library.
The program is free, and different materials will be provided. Children will make a very special type of puppet guided by Suzan Brawnlyn. Registration is required to participate in this program.

Sitka Emblem Club will hold its business meeting Thursday, June 11, at the Sitka Elks Lodge.
Celtic Dance
Class Listed
Those who would you like to try a Celtic dance class with the Sitka Spruce Celtic Dancers are invited to sign up for classes on June 15 and 22.
Those preschool age to third grade will dance 10:30-11:15 a.m. and fourth grade and older will dance 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the New Archangel Dance Studio. The cost of each class is $10.

Relay for Life
Benefit on Tap
Tickets are on sale for a craft beer tasting fundraiser for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.
The benefit is 6-8 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at Westmark Sitka banquet room. The cost is $25 a ticket, with $10 going to the nonprofit. Tickets are at Watson Point Liquor, Silver Basin and Cascade Convenience Center.
The event will include 20 craft beers, food, door prizes and free beer mugs.
It is hosted by Watson Point Liquors with beer vendors Baranof Island Brewing, Denali Brewing, Silver Gulch, Sam Adams, Deschutes, Rogue, Elysian and others.
Chinook Futures
Meeting June 15
The Chinook Futures Coalition will hsot a port meeting 6 p.m. Monday, June 15, at the Sitka Sound Science Center’s Karsh Classroom.
Information will be given about the Snake River fall chinook petition for delisting. Other topics of interest will be discussed, including the latest information on the abundance index and possible scenarios for the upcoming chinook fisheries.
