Sabbath Poetry 

Retreat Aug. 22

 St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church invites the community to a Sabbath Poetry Retreat 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 22 at the church, 611 Lincoln St.

The group will reflect on scriptures and sabbath poetry from a book, “This Day: Collected & New Sabbath Poems,” by Wendell Berry.

 Gil Truitt to Share

SE Alaska PhotosSitka Tribe of Alaska has a large collection of photos available to share with the public. Photos were donated by Tribal Citizen and local historian Gil Truitt, who asked that they be given away to those interested.

The collection will be available at Sitka Tribe of Alaska offices at 456 Katlian Street from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19 through Friday, Oct. 16.

The prints are primarily sports-related, span the mid-20th century, and include pictures from throughout Southeast Alaska – from Metlakatla to Yakutat.  Former Sheldon Jackson, Mt. Edgecumbe and Sitka High students will recognize many of their classmates and school faculty in the photos.

Monthly Grind

Schedule on Tap

The Sitka Monthly Grind producers  announce the schedule for its 21st season.

The philosophy will remain family-oriented, affordable and non-political. The grind will remain under the “umbrella” of the Greater Sitka Arts Council. 

Monthly Grinds are scheduled: Oct. 10, Nov. 6 Whalefest Grind, Dec. 12,  Jan. 16, Feb. 13, March 12 and April 2. The majority of the shows will be at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi. For questions call Ted at 747- 5482 or Jeff, 747-4821.

Mycopigments

Workshop Set

A mycopigments workshop, exploring mushroom and lichen dyes, with Alissa Allen will be held 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 12 at Blatchley Middle School.

The workshop cost is $60, and that includes all supplies. A potluck lunch is planned and participants are asked to take a dish to share.

The workshop covers all aspects of getting started with mushroom and lichen dyes and leaves students with the tools to carry on their own exploration.

A statement from the artist reads:  

‘‘Starting with 10-12 different species, with the addition of safe mordants and pH modifiers, we end up with about 20 colors in all,’’ Allen said. ‘‘All of the dyes used are ethically harvested, dried, and weighed (using some fresh material if available).’’

Students will learn about mushroom safety, identification basics, habitats and ethical harvest. Participants receive a customized color guide to the best regional dye mushrooms and lichens and learn where to go for help with identification.

Participants will work with wool and silk fiber. The instructor said that yarn for class is pre-mordanted to allow ample time to focus on dyes; however, the group will discuss the steps for preparing the fibers for the dye bath. It includes scouring, mordanting and techniques to avoid felting wool.

Workshop attendees will be guided through the steps to create an intricate arashi shibori inspired design. Each student will receive a blank scarf for practice. Students will take home a detailed recipe card showcasing the rainbow of samples dyed in class. The recipe card lists both the scientific and common names of the fungi and lichens used to make the dye, it also includes the ratios of fungus to fiber, any mordants used, and pH modifications required to achieve the colors.

A detailed procedural handout, a customized guide to local dye fungi and a hand-dyed scarf will be included. The workshop covers all aspects of getting started with mushroom and lichen dyes and leaves the student with the tools to carry on with their own exploration.

Support Group to

Dementia Listed

Caring for Loved Ones Together, a statewide phone support group for those caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s and other dementia, will be held 2-3 p.m. Aug. 19 at Brave Heart Volunteers, in the Pioneers Home Manager’s House.

Gay Wellman, education specialist of Alzheimer’s Resources of Alaska, will lead the call.

Alzheimer’s Resources of Alaska and Brave Heart Volunteers jointly facilitate the support group on the first and third Wednesday of each month for caregivers to gain understanding about Alzheimer’s and other dementia, learn helpful  tips and build support for each other. 

The call is appropriate for those providing care for a loved one in Sitka as well as for those providing care from a distance.

Participants are asked to arrive shortly before 2 p.m. and are welcome to stay after the call to lend support for each other. Individuals may also call in directly from their homes by dialing  1-877-216-1555, Code 927989. Registration is not necessary.

Alaska Day Festival

Planners to Meet

Coordinators for Sitka’s 2015 mid-October community Alaska Day Festival will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, and each following third Tuesday of the month at 601 Alice Loop, a change in location. 

To recognize the facility’s importance in community life, “Meet Me at Centennial” is this year’s theme chosen by the Alaska Day Committee.

Events on the tentative schedule include New Archangel Dancers end-of-season show on Monday evening, Oct. 12, and Concert by 9th Army Band on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Performing Arts Center.  The gala ball on Saturday evening, Oct. 17, will be at in Allen Hall on the SJ Campus.

The traditional parade on Lake and Lincoln streets on Sunday, Oct. 18, will be followed by the Transfer Re-enactment Ceremony on Castle Hill.

Other events are being planned by Alaska Day Committee.

Emblem Club Meets

Sitka Emblem Club will hold a business meeting 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Elks Lodge. Nominations for vice president will be taken.

Sitka Fellows

Discuss Work

The Sitka Fellows will discuss their creative work 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Odess Theater in Allen Hall on the SJ Campus.

The fellows include a fiction writer, a composer, a graphic novelist, a political thinker, an artist, and an oral historian. The event is free and open to the public.

Donations for the fellows program will be accepted at the event, and light refreshments will be provided. The Sitka Fellows program is sponsored by the Island Institute, in partnership with the Sitka Fine Arts Camp.
