Pioneers to Meet
Pioneers of Alaska Igloos 22 and 12 will meet Thursday, Sept. 3, at Sitka Methodist Church on Kimsham Street. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6. A short business meeting will feature convention plans. Pioneers and friends are welcome.
Open House Set
At KGH School
Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School will host an open house for all students and parents 2:30-3:30 p.m.
Parents and students may proceed to the child’s classroom and meet their teachers.
School pictures for KGH will be taken the morning of Sept. 14. Teachers will hand out picture packets for students to take home.
Community photos are at KGH 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17.
New student registration packets and information are available at KGH 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. daily.

Memorial Aug. 29
For William Stortz
A memorial service honoring the life of William Stortz will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, in the Odess Theater in Allen Auditorium on Sheldon Jackson Campus.
The service will be followed by a community potluck in Sweetland Hall. Local foods are encouraged and beverages are welcome. Those taking food should drop it off at Sweetland Hall cafeteria before arriving to the service in Odess Theater.
Painting Class
To Use Berries
The public is invited to join in a First Friday event, “A Berry Good Harvest!” 5-8 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Island Artists Gallery, 205 B Lincoln St.
Participants will paint small images using inks made from local berries.
‘‘Bring your imagination, we’ll supply the rest,’’ organizers said. ‘‘Help us celebrate the bounty of summer and the richness of our community.’’

Story Time Set
‘‘Star Wars and Star Planets’’ will be the theme of the next preschool story time at Kettleson Memorial Library 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. The program includes readings, rhymes, songs and a craft project. Everybody is welcome.

Volunteers Sought
For Math Event
More than 250 visitors from across Alaska and Outside will attend the 2015 Alaska Math and Science Conference (www.amsc2015.org) Oct. 23-25 in Sitka.
Volunteers are needed to help make the event successful, including staffing a welcome table throughout the conference, organizers said.

The Youth Totem Pole Project blessing of the log ceremony will be held at Sitka National Historical Park visitor center. Pacific High youths and carver Tommy Joseph will be introduced and the story and design of the totem pole project will be presented.

Sitka Volunteer Fire Department reports ice on Swan Lake is 7-9 inches deep and safe for skating. However, officials warn skaters to avoid the end of the lake near Lakeside Grocery, since the ice is thinner there.
