Mental Health
First Aid Taught
Sitka Counseling and Prevention Services, in partnership with St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, will sponsor three Mental Health First Aid trainings for the Sitka community.
Cost for the training is $35. Typically the cost is $75. The dates and times for the training are as follows: 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church; 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church; and 5:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 7-8 (location is to be determined.
Individuals will need to attend only one of the trainings to become a certified mental health first aid responder. To register or find out more information, contact Sitka Counseling and Prevention Services at 747-3636. Instructors are Maybelle Filler and Loyd Platson.
New Hours
For Ventures
The Ventures school-age program will no longer be open mornings because of staffing.
However, it will be open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sept. 25, 28 and 29 during inservice days. The drop-in rate is $10 per hour for children who are not currently enrolled and attending Ventures. Children already enrolled will be charged $55 for the full day and $35 for part day.

Injury Prevention
Workshop on Tap
AMSEA will conduct a free injury prevention workshop 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 at the Sitka Sound Science Center.
The workshop title is “Strains, Sprains and Pains: Ergonomic Injury Prevention for Commercial Fishermen and Other Workers.” Donald Bloswick, Ph.D., will instruct participants on ways to avoid musculoskeletal problems common in commercial fishing and other industries. Fishermen may take a mat to practice some exercises to “tune up” their bodies before, during and after the season.
Bloswick is an adjunct professor of bioengineering and a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Utah. He is an author of more than 31 scholarly papers on ergonomics and injury prevention. Bloswick is an expert in the field and has written two papers with AMSEA Executive Director Jerry Dzugan, on injury prevention in the commercial fishing industry.
This workshop is offered free of charge from funding by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Those interested in attending may register online at www.amsea.org or call 747-3287.
UAS Dog Classes
UAS-Sitka Campus will offer its next dog classes Wednesdays, Sept. 16 -Oct. 21.
Puppy Kindergarten, for puppies up to 6 months, will be 7-8 p.m. followed by Dog Obedience, for young dogs over 6 months of age, 7-8 p.m.

Women of Science
Day for Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts of Alaska will present Women of Science and Technology Day Saturday, Sept. 26, at Yaw Art Center on the SJ Campus.
Featured are hands-on workshops in science and technology related topics that are led by women in the fields. The cost is $6. Financial assistance is available. Non-Girl Scouts are welcome to attend.
Girls in kindergarten through third grades will meet 9:45 a.m.-noon and girls in fourth through eighth grades meet 12:15-3 p.m.

Reduced-Price
Lunches Noted
Applications for free/reduced price meals for students attending the Sitka School District this fall are available at all school offices and the district office, or at https://schoolmealsapplication.education.alaska.gov/Register.aspx
Parents are being encouraged to apply early and online.
Households that were eligible last school year for free or reduced lunches are reminded to reapply each school year to verify eligibility.

Quilters Meet
Ocean Wave Quilt Guild will hold its monthly meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Grace Harbor Church across from Sea Mart.
The guild meets the first Tuesday of the month, September through May, for inspiration, friendship, creativity and support. Meetings are open to anyone and membership is not required.

Sitka Shootout
Golf Tourney Set
The Sitka Shootout Golf Tournament is slated Nov. 16-18 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Sitkans are invited to play three rounds of golf and have lunch for $225 per person. Money raised will go to the Gene Prewitt Scholarship Fund.
