Haunted Ship

Set for Oct. 29

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Maple will again this year be transformed into a Haunted Ship 6-10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Coast Guard pier.

Baked goods will be for sale on the pier. 

The event is a food drive to benefit the local area. Donations are encouraged.

The Coast Guard reminds parents that discretion is advised as the haunted ship may not be suitable for young children.

ANB to Meet

ANB Camp 1 will meet 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at the ANB Founders Hall.

On the agenda will be nominations for new officers for the coming year, 2015-16 and guest speakers from SEARHC.

Healing and Hope

Service Listed

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church is inviting the community to join a special Service of Healing and Hope, celebrating cancer survivors.

The service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, at 611 Lincoln Street.

Rosary Rally

Set for Oct. 10

The public is invited to join the annual America Needs Fatima Public Square Rosary Rally noon-2 p.m. Oct. 10 in the parking lot in front of the Church of the Nazarene.

Rosaries are available. Those with questions may call Virginia at 747-8024 or Michael at 738-2885.

Chamber to Meet

The Chamber of Commerce will begin its weekly Wednesday luncheons noon Sept. 23 at the Westmark Sitka banquet room.

The first lunch will feature a forum of the five School Board candidates. The public is invited to attend and to have questions for the candidates.

Exchange Student

Applications Sought

The Rotary Club of Sitka is accepting applications for students who want to spend their 2016-17 year in a foreign country.

Candidates for the program must be under 18 during their year of exchange. They should be open-minded and curious, with an interest in foreign languages and cultures, said Rotary Youth Exchange. The cost is $7,400, which includes plane fare to and from the foreign country, three orientations in the Anchorage area before and after the exchange year, orientations abroad, tuition for school, health insurance and a monthly stipend.

Representatives from the program – including last year’s exchange student to Bolivia – will be speaking to sophomore classes at Sitka High in October. Applications are available in the Sitka High counseling office, and are due Oct. 23.

Running of Boots

The Sitka Local Foods Network has announce the prize categories for Saturday’s Running of the Boots to be Fastest Boots, Fastest Boots, Best Looking Boots, Zaniest Outfit, Most Creative, Best Couple, Best Family Group, Best Adult Group, Best Kids Group, Most Creative Kid Group and a few Wild Cards.

Prizes include toys, gift certificates from local restaurants and merchants and a flightseeing trip from Harris Air.

The event begins at 10 a.m. under the big tent next to the St. Michael’s Cathedral on Lincoln Street. Costume judging is at 10:30 a.m. and the race starts promptly at 11 a.m.

Job Center Hours

Sitka Job Center will be open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday with limited services available Sept. 30-Oct. 16.

Customers can use the computers and office equipment for job search purposes, to pick up applications and use the unemployment hotline. At times, staff will not be available to assist with technical services, such as reset passwords and update resumes. Customers will then need to contact the Juneau Job Center, 907-465-4562.
