Beards, Bonnets

Winners Told

Claiming the prizes Tuesday night for their display at the Alaska Day Variety Show, Helen Cunningham was judged to have the “prettiest” bonnet, and Betty Conklin the “most time period appropriate” hat.

Brian O’Callaghan showed the “fullest” beard, Steve Warren the “wildest,” Kyle Shull the “most dapper,” and Ted Allio “best beard without a moustache.” Henry Colt won ‘‘thinnest beard.’’

 

Sponsors Sought

SAIL is seeking sponsorship for its senior ceramics class at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. Those who can contribute to making art more accessible to seniors, can contact Claire at 747-6859.

 

Senior Group 

To Make Candles

SAIL’s senior group will be making candles 10-11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, at Brave Heart. The cost is $10.

Individuals can meet at Brave Heart. Transportation can be arranged for $2 one way, and $3 round trip. Contact Claire at 747-6859.

 

Beekeeping Basics

Presentation Topic

A presentation on beekeeping basics by Anchorage beekeeper Joseph Linden will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Sealing Cove Business Center on Alice Loop road.

The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session including Bill Lehmann and Brinnen Carter, both of whom have beekeeping experience in the lower 48. Brinnen is interested in bringing true Russian bees to Sitka, and has a comprehensive library of beekeeping resources. Sponsored by Sitka Gardening and Horticulture. Questions: Call 738-2089.

Awards Given 

From among the many attendees in elegant costume reminiscent of the 1867 era, the following received awards at the Alaska Day Ball on Saturday night at Allen Hall: Day Attire Lady, Kris Wilcox; Evening Attire  Lady, Barbara Gresli, and Couple, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Ness; American Military Man, Don Spenard, and Couple, Larry and Stephanie Jester; Russian Military Man, Ted Allio; Ethnic Period Lady, Lisa Killinger, and Couple,                       Linda Janacek and Wayne Dye; Dance Hall Girl, Kim Nielsen, and Man,                            Jim Munday.

Prizes were copper mugs with the Alaska Day Festival logo.

The Frankie Haag Memorial Award of $100 for a ballgown made by the wearer was presented to Carol Hughey.

Ball coordinator Betty Conklin and assistant Helen Cunningham extend Alaska Day Festival’s thanks to all who participated in wearing period costuming or regalia for the week’s activities.

 

Alaska Day Parade

Winners Announced

After receiving the anonymous judges’ report, Alaska Day Festival organizers have made the following awards of $150, $100 and $50, respectively, for entries in the annual parade held Sunday afternoon:

– Civilian marching unit: first                Blatchley Middle School Band; second, Sitka High School Band, and third, Seattle Firefighters Pipes and Drums;

– Symbolic of 1867: first, Sitka Ninth Infantry and Russian Re-enactors;

– Organization entry: first Sitka Sound Slayers, second Girl Scouts, and third 4-H Club;

– Theme award: “Meet Me At Centennial”: first the Salvation Army;

– Business Entry, first Junk Trunk; second Alaska Airlines; third Sea Mart.

Appreciation is extended to all who participated in the parade and the spectators who cheered them on.

 

 

Emblem Club Meets

Sitka Emblem Club will hold a social meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct.  22,  at the Sitka Elks Lodge.

Kids Halloween Party

Sitka Emblem Club’s annual kids Halloween party will be 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Sitka Elks Lodge. A costume contest, food and games are planned.

 

Fall Carnival at

Grace Harbor

Grace Harbor will hold a ‘‘Fall Carnival with a Sitka Twist’’ 6-8 p.m.  Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1904 Halibut Point Road, across from Sea Mart.

A free family event will include games, prizes, snacks, stories and a photo booth. Costumes are welcome. Contact Grace Harbor at 747-5706 with questions.

 

Alaska Day Ball

Door Prize Given

Holding the winning ticket drawn for a door prize at Alaska Day Ball on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Allen Hall, Margo Frank took home the two vouchers for travel anywhere Alaska Airlines flies, valued up to $1,250 each, donated by Alaska Airlines.

Alaska Day Festival planners again thank Alaska Airlines for its donation to promote purchase of tickets which fund the annual non-profit festival activities.

 

Kaagwaantaans Meet

Kaagwaantaans will hold song practice, storytelling and a clan meeting 3 p.m. Sunday at Blatchley Middle School, room 114.

The October PAC meeting will be 6 p.m. tonight in the school library.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.

The freshmen students initiation will be Friday at the school. Dress will be respectable. ... Suspension of three days will be enforced for any of the following violations: throwing of eggs; spraying of shaving cream; cutting of hair; and any pranks which could be harmful to the welfare of the students.
