‘Birding in Alaska’
Topic of Seminar
The Natural History seminar ‘‘Birding in Alaska” is set 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at UAS-Sitka Campus in Room 229.
Participants can take a virtual tour of their vast and varied state as Matt Goff and friends talk about their bird-motivated travels to all corners of Alaska.
Among the speakers will be Gwen Baluss, U.S. Forest Service biologist and master bird bander, who will be in town for the fourth year of an ongoing project investigating Sitka’s wintering song birds.
Banding will take place around town and with classes at Sitka High, Blatchley Middle and Keet Gooshi Heen. For more information about the winter bird banding project go to website http://wiki.seaknature.org/SBBP_Overview.
Funding for the seminar series is provided by a grant to the Sitka Sound Science Center by the Sitka Alaska Permanent Charitable Trust in partnership with the University of Alaska Southeast. Yoga, Live Music
Set at Yoga Union
Yoga Union will offer a special, live-music, power vinyasa flow yoga class 5-6:15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22.

SCT to Present
4 Radio Plays
Sitka Community Theater will present four plays in an evening of Live Radio Theater 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.
The evening will feature Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice (in 20 minutes),” a classic radio comedy “For Business Reasons” and two new works by Rebecca Poulson and Zach Desmond. The show is appropriate for family audiences.
Tickets are $10, and $8 for students and seniors at Old Harbor Books. SCT is a project of the Greater Sitka Arts Council.
‘Deer Processing’
Topic at 4-H Class
Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s language and education instructor Chuck Miller will teach 4-H members and STA culture class students respect for and how to process the Sitka black-tailed deer 3:45-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Elks Dinner Set
For Gymnastics
A benefit dinner to support the Hames Center gymnastics program will be 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Sitka Elks Lodge.
The $15 dinner includes spaghetti, side salad and garlic bread. Beverages can be purchased separately.
The dessert auction begins at 7 p.m. Desserts are still needed for the fundraiser.

Better Breathers
Club to Meet
The Better Breathers Club will meet 1-2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at the Swan Lake Senior Center.
The Better Breathers Club is a support group for patients with chronic lung disease (especially COPD, but also asthma, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer and other chronic lung diseases). The meeting is also open to caregivers, family, friends and support persons.

‘Concussions in
Youth Sports’ Topic
Don Lehmann, MD, FACSM, and Eric Speck, PT, ATC, will give a free lecture about concussions and the youth athlete 6 p.m. tonight at Sitka Physical Therapy.

Programs Listed
St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church invites the community to participate in special Advent Season Program offerings.
On Nov. 28, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., an advent quiet day retreat will be held.
An advent lessons and carols service will be held 10 a.m. Nov. 29.
Beginning Thursday, Dec 3, at 11 a.m., a weekly book/Bible study (Advent 2015: The Gift of New Hope) will be held. The last Bible study group will be held on Wednesday Dec 23. Wreath, Garland
Sale Underway
Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool’s wreath and garland sale has been set in motion.
A 22-inch rustic cedar wreath is $33 with a decorative ribbon bow or $30 without a bow. The garland is $30 for 15 feet or $120 for the 75-foot length. The cedar garland can be draped around a door or both can be cut to length. Wreaths are made of noble fir, cedar and juniper berries. Special orders for large 36-inch rustic cedar wreaths are available for $67.

Kettleson Memorial Library’s Film Noir Club will screen the 1955 classic “Kiss Me Deadly,” 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the library.

White E Sale Set
Christmas decorations will be available at the noon Thursday opening of the White Elephant Shop.
Included will be lights, garlands, candles and other types of decorations. In the children’s store, holiday dresses, winter jackets, snow pants, hats, and gloves will be available.
SJ Museum Closure
Sheldon Jackson Museum will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.
