Alaska’s Budget

Topic of Forum

Island Institute, the governor’s office and Sitka Chamber of Commerce will host a presentation and question forum about Alaska’s budget crisis noon-2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi. 

Participants can learn more about the numbers, explore future scenarios with a budget game, and ask questions of elected representatives.

William Stortz

Gallery Dedicated

The City of Sitka and the Greater Sitka Arts Council invites the public to attend the dedication of the William Stortz Gallery at City Hall.

The brief ceremony will be 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, on the second floor of the city hall building.

The gallery will be used as a free exhibition space for Sitka’s artists and craftspeople, as well as an ongoing opportunity to view the photographic work of former city official Stortz. 

Light refreshments will follow the dedication ceremony and all are invited to attend. For more information call 747-5941.

Brave Heart Bowls

Event Set Dec. 7

Brave Heart Volunteers will hold its annual Brave Heart Bowls fundraising event 5:30-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at the Odess Theatre in Allen Hall on the SJ Campus.

More than 50 homemade soups, desserts and breads will be available, along with a chance to purchase handmade ceramic bowls.

The evening will include a silent auction and live music. Tickets are on sale at Old Harbor Books or the Brave Heart Volunteers office for $15 in advance and $5 for children under 10 years of age. Tickets are $20 at the door.

All proceeds go to providing programs for Sitkans facing chronic illness, terminal illness, end-of-life and grief and bereavement. Call 747-4600 for more information.

Donations Sought

For Bowls Event

Brave Heart Volunteers is seeking donations of soup and silent auction items for the BHV Bowls event to be held 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at the Odess Theatre in Allen Hall on the SJ  Campus.

SCS Lists Hike

All Sitka Conservation Society members are invited to join SCS staff on a lunch break hike along the Cross Trail noon Friday, Nov. 20.

Wearable Arts

The Greater Sitka Arts Council has released information for those who wish to participate in the 8th Wearable Art Show matinee and evening shows on March 26 at the Performing Arts Center. A dress rehearsal is planned March 25.

A new feature this year is that artists may request a color background, or slide, for their models while they are on stage. That information will be needed three weeks in advance of the show.

The application may be found at www.thinkartthinksitka.com and is due Feb. 29. The official title of the show is Alaska Airlines Wearable Arts Runway Show presented by the Greater Sitka Arts Council.

African Culture

Topic of Talk

Nigerian writer Samuel Kolawole will give a talk about African culture, history and literature 7-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at 304 Baranof Street.

Kolawole will also read one of his own stories. Kolawole is the International Writer in Residence at the Island Institute this month.
