Mariner’s CPR,

First Aid Taught

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will conduct a first aid and CPR workshop designed for commercial fishermen and other mariners in Sitka 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at the NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.

Instructor Eric Van Cise will cover CPR and automatic external defibrillators; treatment of choking; medical emergencies; trauma; environmental hazards; patient assessment; medical communications; drowning and hypothermia; and common fishing injuries.  Attendees will receive a U.S. Coast Guard-accepted, two-year certificate issued by the American Safety and Health Institute.

Drill Conductor

Workshop Set

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a 10-hour fishing vessel drill conductor workshop in Sitka 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Jan. 6 and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 7.

The workshop will be conducted at the Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road. Commercial fishermen and other mariners gain hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea.

It will cover cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares and maydays; man-overboard recovery and firefighting; immersion suits and PFDs, helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures, and emergency drills. 

Drill conductor workshops meet the training requirements for documented commercial fishing vessels operating beyond the federal boundary line. The workshop is offered to commercial fishermen at no cost, with support from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The cost is $175 for all others.

To Present Play

Sitka Assembly of God will present the Christmas play “The Loaned Manger,” 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20.

‘‘Bring the family and enjoy a western twist to the Christmas story,’’ the church said.

Science Center

Sitka Sound Science Center will have a holiday gift sale 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at 834 Lincoln Street.

Girls on the Run

Coaches Sought

Girls on the Run is seeking coaches for the eighth season of its after-school empowerment program for girls in third through fifth grades. It starts in February.

Coaches make connections with girls based on empowerment and respect and inspire them to learn, dream, live and run, organizers said.

Lutheran Church

Sets Holiday Events

Sitka Lutheran Church has set its holiday schedule of worship.

Tonight, the sanctuary will be open for Blue Christmas, a time and place to be contemplative in a busy season. It is open to the public 5-7 p.m.

On Thursday, Dec. 24, the family Christmas Eve candlelight service will be held at 7 p.m.

Christmas Day worship will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 25, at the Pioneers Home Chapel. It is jointly held with St. Peter’s and the United Methodist churches.

Lessons and carols of Christmas worship will be 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 27.

 

 Mountain Goat

Area is Closed

The Sitka District Ranger, under authority from the Federal Subsistence Board, is taking action to close the Mt. Furuhelm/Mt. Ada zone to the harvest of mountain goats 11:59 p.m., Friday, Dec. 18. It will remain closed through the season, Dec. 31.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has issued a concurrent closure in the same zone. The remainder of Baranof Island will remain open for goat hunting unless closed by past or future special action.

On Honor Roll

Sitka High graduate Soren T. White, a senior in biohealth sciences, was named to the scholastic honor roll fall term at Oregon State University, Corvallis.

Honor roll students earn a 3.5 grade point average to be placed on the honor roll while carrying at least 12 graded hours of course work.

Soren is the son of Trish and Dirk White.

 

Community Response

Counseling Offered

Sitka Counseling, along with partners Youth Advocates of Sitka and SEARHC, remind the community of an option for getting a counseling session during the holiday season.

Those who are feeling sad and remembering the August landslide can talk to a counselor.

Letters to Santa

Letters posted here will be forwarded to Santa Claus at the North Pole. Letters may be dropped off at the Sentinel office or at Sitka True Value to be printed in the newspaper and placed here.

Spring Yoga
