Martha June Howard
Martha June Howard, who lived most of her life in Sitka, passed away July 17 at the Sitka Pioneers Home. She was 82.
A celebration of her life will be held 4 p.m. Sept. 10 at the American Legion. Family and friends are invited to share main dishes, salads and desserts.
Martha was born August 28, 1938, in Beaver, Alaska, the daughter of Maggie (Allashuk) and Arthur Henry Sr. She attended Mt. Edgecumbe High School.
She married George R. Howard Sr. on Nov. 2, 1956, in the Littlefield family home on Katlian Street.
Over the years she worked at Shee Atika hotel in housekeeping, and was a waitress at both the SAFE Harbor Inn on Japonski Island and the Harbor Inn, on Katlian Street.
In 2017 she was named the Sitka Elks Lodge Mother of the Year, and a celebration was held at the lodge in her honor.
Among her favorite pastimes were playing Bingo and pool.
Martha is survived by her daughter Velma and son-in-law Robert Somerville of Junction City, Oregon; and daughter Anna Howard and sons George Howard Jr. and Ray Howard, all of Sitka; and grandchildren Shayne and Caroline Thomas, Georgina Kennedy, Ann and Matt Taylor, Helen Kennedy, Scott Kennedy, Jacob Kennedy, Bob Hendrix, David Blore, Gary Blore, Michael Blore, and George and Rachel Wathen.
She also is survived by her sisters and brothers: Elsie Pitka of Fairbanks, Annie John of Fairbanks, Art Henry Jr. of Beaver, Roy Henry of Beaver, Jerry Henry of Anchorage, and William Henry of Wasilla.
Her sisters-in-law are Shirley Howard of Sitka, Diane Howard of Auburn, Washington, and Gina Lundy of Bremerton, Washington.
She also is survived by many nephews and nieces.

Sitka Emblem Club has begun taking orders for Thanksgiving pies. Forms can be picked up and dropped off at the Elks Lodge and the Daily Sentinel. This year’s sale is a fundraiser for Aurora’s Watch and will include donations of pies to the Swan Lake Senior Center and Aurora’s Watch.
