Services Set Sunday For Ramon Alan Davis, 75

Ramon Alan Davis

Ramon Alan Davis passed away unexpectedly August 30, 2021, at age of 75, with his wife Nancy at his side.

He was born September 26, 1945, in Evanston, Illinois, to Jim and Louise Davis. He joined sister Natalie, and the family moved to Greenville, South Carolina, in 1950, and then later to Sitka where sister Laurie was born.

This began Alan’s lifelong love affair with the outdoors, Sitka and its people. The Davis family was instrumental in the founding of the Sitka Church of Christ.

Alan married the love of his life,  Nancy Blatchley, on February 19, 1965, in Los Angeles, California, where both were attending college. Alan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology, and began his career with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.  He and Nancy moved to Kodiak, and then to Sitka where daughter Lynn Marie was born in 1972.

Alan, along with his father Jim, sister Natalie, daughter Lynn, and fellow Sitkans Bing Gouker, Atsuo Tsunoda, and Dan Keck formed the Baranof Bluegrass Band. They played in local venues, as well as festivals, fairs and concerts across the United States and Japan.

Alan was an extremely accomplished banjo player and had a beautiful voice which he lent to Bluegrass, gospel and many popular tunes. His modest presence and subtle humor brought joy to his family as well as audiences he entertained.

Alan retired from the Fish and Game in 1990 and began A. Davis Enterprises, which he continued for 20 plus years.

Alan had a life-long relationship with God, and was known for his quiet kindness, generosity and selflessness.

He began as song leader of the Church of Christ as a child and remained in that role for all of his life.

Alan is survived by Nancy, his beloved wife of 55 years, with whom he shared an unparalleled life of devotion.  Also surviving is daughter Lynn Marie Lunas, of whom he was exceptionally proud, son-in-law Colin and granddaughter Morgan of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Remaining survivors include his sisters, Natalie Callaway of Sitka,  and Laurie Cooper of Lugoff, South Carolina; sister-in-law Vicki Gravelle, husband Orlin of Kalispell, Montana; nieces Debby McClellan of Kuna, Idaho, Desiree Young (Taylor) of River Falls, Wisconsin, April Russell (Josh) of Kalispell, Ashely Pietras of Columbia, South Carolina, and Caila Amaya-Carreno (Ricarado) of North Las Vegas, Nevada; and nephew Brent McClung (Dawn) of Sitka.

Also surviving are numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and many lifelong friends.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Louise Davis; father-in-law  Ned Blatchley;  mother-in-law Betty Blatchley Caldwell; and nephew Dustin Gravelle.

Services will be held at the Sitka Church of Christ, 1113 Edgecumbe Drive, at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 5,  with a reception to follow. All are invited to attend, and are asked to please wear a mask.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Church of Christ in Alan’s memory.
