Hilarion R. Miguel Dies; Longtime Sitkan was 92

Hilarion Recaido Miguel

 

Hilarion Recaido Miguel, a longtime resident, passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 27, 2021. He was 92. 

Hilarion was born July 23, 1929, in Laoag City, Philippines where he worked as a driver. He met his wife, Martina Bangloy, in Isabela and they married March 14, 1954. On February 14, 1985, they emigrated to the United States. After a brief visit to Hawaii, they moved to Sitka, where Hilarion was a driver and then worked at Sitka Sound Seafoods as a fish processor until he retired, after nearly 25 years of service.

He was an avid tinkerer and reader.  Solitaire was his favorite card game and he loved playing cards with his wife on the couch. 

What he enjoyed most was supporting his family in Sitka and in the Philippines. 

Hilarion was preceded in death by his parents Fortunata Recaido and Eugenio Miguel, both of Laoag City; and siblings Isabel dela Cruz Barroga of Honolulu and Marcelina Martin of Sitka.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Martina Miguel of Sitka; daughters Josie Ancheta (Robert) and Marchelle Rodrigo (Zaldy); grandchildren JR Ancheta, Aiza Miguel, Dazlymar Rodrigo-Grenadier (Nash), RJ Miguel (Kylee Jones), Luckyrae Miguel, Dhariel Rodrigo; and great-grandchild Kyler Rodrigo.

He also is survived by nieces Susie Martin,  Maria Warlita Martin; nephew Rudy Martin; and many grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved great-grand-dogs: Toby, Maizy and Loki. 

Pallbearers are Edmon Dumag, Edward Dumag, Aedon Dumag, Pete Villanueva, Mike Romine, Devan Romine, Levi Cumlat and Nash Grenadier.

Friends and family of Hilarion are invited to attend the funeral Mass at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, 12:05 p.m. Thursday, November 4. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.

Jonathan Krebs, Sitka Economic Development Association director, said today he’s resigning to take a job in Ottumwa, Iowa. Krebs, who also is manager of the Sawmill Cove Industrial Park, has held the SEDA post for five years.

Gerry Helland of Sitka has been selected by the coaches to referee at the Alaska State High School Basketball Championships in Anchorage this weekend. Sitka and Wrangell are representing Southeast at the tourney.
