Robert Joseph Layton
Robert Joseph Layton, a longtime Sitka resident, died Oct. 2, 2022, at the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer.
Bob was 92 years young, his family said, and lived a happy life in Sitka. A “people” person, he enjoyed talking with family, friends and neighbors, whoever crossed his path, sharing his many stories and entertaining them. He also shared the oatmeal cookies he made using his own secret recipe.
He loved meeting new friends, and volunteering wherever he could help.
Bob was saddened that he didn’t make it back to Sitka to say farewell to all his friends, a family member said. “He tried hard to WILL himself to beat his illness, but each day he grew weaker.”
Bob was born Dec. 20, 1929, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He served first in the U.S. Army and then the U.S. Air Force. He was a building contractor in Alaska, and after he and his wife Midge moved from Anchorage to her hometown, Sitka, he worked at Alaska Lumber & Pulp.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge.
Bob leaves behind a large family in the lower 48 that he loved very much and talked to by phone as often as possible. They include daughters Jae and Joyce in Washington state, son Darrel in California, twin sons Robert and Ron, who live on the east coast, and grandchildren.
He’s also survived by his wife Midge, of Sitka, and sisters-in-law Betty Goldsbury and Josephine Patterson of Sitka and Irene Vadon of Anchorage.
Military services are to be held later at a time to be announced.

Police Blotter: Preston Williams reported $6 worth of gas was stolen from his vehicle while it was parked at the Kiksadi. Paul Garwood said two tires on the KSA-TV van were slashed while the truck was parked at the Hobby House. George Reid, Arrowhead Trailer Court said guns, steamer trunks and decanters valued at $1,500 were stolen by burglars. A telephone was reported detached from the booth next to the post office.
