Daniel J. Newman Dies; Longtime Sitkan was 64

Daniel Jay Newman

Daniel Jay Newman, 64, longtime resident of Sitka, passed away September 2, 2024, while in Juneau.
Dan was born October 10, 1959, in Bremerton, Washington, to David and Caroline Newman. He met his wife, Maria, in Bremerton, and shortly afterward they moved to Sitka, where they raised their five children.
Dan was a longtime employee of Sitka Sound Seafood and Seafood Producers Co-op.
As an avid outdoor enthusiast, he loved hunting and fishing in the Alaskan wilderness. He enjoyed reading a good book and was a dedicated family man who loved spending time with his children.
Dan is survived by his father, David Newman Sr.; his brothers, David Newman Jr. and Terry Newman, and brother-in-law Steve Bowhay; his sister, Tina Daris and her husband Jim; his five children – James Newman, Jesse Newman and wife Erin, Jay Newman, Tanner Newman and wife Nicole, and Victoria Newman; and his two grandchildren, Lillian and Ayla.
Dan was preceded in death by his sister Cindy Bowhay, mother Caroline Newman, and close friend Charlotte Winnie. The family will hold a private memorial service.
