Service to be Sept. 27 For Tom Schauwecker

Thomas Michael Schauwecker, a life-long Alaskan, died in San Diego, California, March 3, 2024.
A Mass to honor his passing will be celebrated at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church at noon Friday, September 27. Tom’s ashes will be placed in a columberium at the Shrine of Saint Therese in Juneau on October 1.
Tom was born in Sitka on June 21, 1971. He attended school in Sitka, then spent a year in Fairbanks with his Uncle Dave before moving to Anchorage for two years to attend the University of Alaska.
 He was fishing out of Yakutat where he met and then married Jennifer Younger. After they moved back to Sitka Tom continued to fish with Jennifer’s uncle when their son Jordan was born. Although Jennifer and Tom separated, they maintained a loving friendship. Tom moved to Juneau with his son Jordan, who lived with him until he was old enough to start school, at which time he returned to Sitka to live with his mother.
While in Juneau, Tom began working in construction, eventually building several homes, including one for himself and one for his brother John and John’s wife Darcy Zemlicka.
While living in Juneau, Tom had two more sons, Harley and Hayden, and a daughter, Hope, with his partner Corina Willard, who preceded Tom in death, in November 2021.
Tom was blessed with a grand-daughter, BrynBaelyn, born to Shelby Gorman and Jordan Schauwecker in San Diego, California, on February 2, 2022.
Tom is survived by his parents, Sherri and Gerry Schauwecker of Sitka; and four brothers Edward (Linda Bonne) of Juneau, Daniel (Linda Lou) of Blackfoot, Idaho, John (Darcy) of Juneau, and Brian (Sue Conrad) of Sitka; and his sister, Christine Clevenger (Rett) of Park City, Utah.
Tom also is survived by 20 nieces and nephews and 14 great-nieces and great-nephews; uncles David Giles of Grand Junction, Colorado, Richard Schauwecker of Sarasota Florida, Tim Erickson of Chicago, Illinois, Chuck Giles of Olympia, Washington;  aunts Jean Erickson of Chicago, Illinois, Lila Schauwecker of Fort Meyer, Florida, and Barbara Zobian of Waukesha, Wisconsin; and numerous cousins and many friends.

Photo caption: Mary Lou Colliver presents Sitka Fire Dept. Acting Chief Dave Swearingen a check for $325 to help restore the 1926 Chevrolet fire truck originally purchased by Art Franklin. Colliver donated the money after her business, Colliver Shoes, borrowed the truck to use during Moonlight Madness.  The truck is in need of an estimated $20,000 worth of restoration work, Swearingen said.

November 1974

Sitka Community Hospital Administrator Martin Tirador and hospital board chairman Lawrence Porter told the Assembly Tuesday about the need for a new hospital to replace the existing 18-year-old one. The cost would be about $6.89 million with $2.2 million of that required locally.
